 NB>> Exactly.
ML> It's a good thing Annie gave me a camera. As long as I can
ML> put my nose up to a laptop screen I can at least relive my
ML> former triumphs. Not that I expect an immediate downturn in
ML> my wanderings, but some constriction is likely to happen
 ML> sooner or later.

Yeah... eventually... I don't wander as I used to, already... although,
with more fluidity of cash that might be a little ameliorated... have to
wait and see. Having a record of past travels does help one relive the
memories... :)

 ML> I hope I don't live until a trip to Rock
ML> Creek Park or Cleveland becomes the excitement of the month.

Just have to plan things so that one is within easy call of someone to
take you off places... on a more regular basis... ;)

ML>> Good when one's partner has complementary needs to one -
ML>> probably much better than when he has supplementary ones.
 NB>> It's worked well for us... :)
ML> My relations have mostly been supplementary ones, which
ML> means that at one point or another my partner in some sense
ML> becomes a competitor for the same resources, whether it be
ML> time or that last seat in first class.

There's always a certain amount of that in any relationship, I think...
some more than others... And even complementary can go overboard at
times, till one feels a bit disconnected... ;)

ML>> My grandfather had the reputation of being the only honest
ML>> guy in Chiang's government. Perhaps it's true - he certainly
ML>> didn't amass huge sums the way many of his friends did.
NB>> And it sounds like he might not have had time to have spent much of
NB>> it, other than in travel... ;)
ML> It's hard to say. He was very discreet, unlike me.

Different times, different places... and different circumstances...

NB>> her estate was split between 16 grandchildren and 3 daughters (who got
NB>> double shares of it)... probably would tot up to something that looked
NB>> like a lot more before it got divvied up... ;)
ML> Yep - 4 (perhaps all 5 at the time, I'm not sure about the
ML> chronology, now that I think about it, I think 5) surviving
ML> kids plus all us grandchildren, who similarly to your
ML> situation got fractional shares - for me just enough to pay
ML> for travel for a year, maybe two at the most.

Dunno how the others dealt with theirs... I put mine into a CD, to let
it grow a little... ;) Someday it might be enough to do something with,
but I hate to have it just pay bills... ;)

NB>> I tend to pick and choose my charity giving carefully... too many even
NB>> of the reasonably meritorious to be able to give to everyone...
ML> I thought the United Way (aka United Fund, fka United Givers'
ML> Fund) was a great idea, divvying up general charitable donations
ML> in an evenhanded way, and I used to give periodically, until I
ML> discovered that appalling amounts of the apportionment was going
ML> both above and below board into the pockets of the administrators.

Yeah, such a good idea, but then not really doing what it was supposed
to be doing... Our local one had an option where one could designate
which charity would get the lot, a useful one back when Kodak expected
you to do your part to support the United Way... But since those days,
we just donate directly when/if/to which... ;)

ML> Now the only such giving I do is to United Airlines, where an
ML> appalling amount of the apportionment goes into the pockets of the
ML> administrators, but at least I get to see the world.

Benefits to you as well... ;)

ML> I will still occasionally sneak a few bucks into the coffers of
ML> Unicef or the Salvation Army but try to do so in a way that I
ML> can't get blamed for doing so and penalized by having thousands
ML> of begging letters clogging my inbox.

Can't say as I blame you much if at all... ;) We do like to have some
sort of official record, being as we do claim it as part of itemizing
deductions, come tax time... And I've become quite adept at ignoring
begging letters, which mostly clog the mailbox on the porch, and go into
the recycle box... ;)
