I've been somewhat closer to a current geobelch on one or
two occasions but through no initiative of my own and
never have had any great urge to get within rock-throwing
distance of one.

Ever heard of a bridge fad of the '70s called Wonder
Bids? Alan Sontag described them by saying that if your
partner made one, you wondered whether or not he had a
holding in the suit he bid.

I think I might agree with that.

Air Canada has instituted a regulation wherein bagpipes are
to be allowed into aircraft cabins as hand carry, whereas
violas are not. True. You can look it up on the Internet,
and it's not even April 1st. No wonder the Canadians are
so weird.

Authentic Scottish Tablet
cat: Scots, dairy, dessert, infantile
yield: 1 kilo

4 c granulated sugar
1/4 lb unsalted butter (NOT margarine)
14 oz cn condensed milk (NOT evaporated milk)
1 fl oz natural vanilla extract

Lightly grease a baking tray (11 x 19" works well)
with butter and set aside.

Put the sugar and milk into a fairly large,
preferably heavy stainless steel saucepan
(mixture will double in quantity as it heats).
Stir together. Add the butter and condensed
milk and stir again.

Put pan on medium-high heat and bring mixture to
the boil (around 10 mins), stirring occasionally.
Once mixture comes to the boil, reduce the heat
until mixture is boiling gently.

Continue to let it boil 20 - 30 min, stirring
occasionally. Remove saucepan from the heat and
add vanilla. Beat the mixture vigorously for
4 - 5 min, or until the mixture starts to feel
more 'stiff' and 'gritty' under the spoon.

At this point the Tablet is ready to be poured
into the baking tray you prepared at the
beginning. Allow mixture to cool a little and
then mark it off into bars, or squares with a
sharp knife.

Tablet is ready to eat when fully cooled.
