Sometimes the music itself was recycled.

It is said that Brahms was once invited back to a lodging he
had occupied as a student, and once there he became agitated
and started clawing at the wallpaper. Apparently, there had
been a draft, and he had used a discarded manuscript to stop
it up. In his mature years he could not rest until he had
destroyed it once and for all.

That sounds like the prize concert rather than the competition
concert. Unlikely he would have been given both concerti during
the competition phase; also that Khrushchev would have attended
any but the culminating event.

Yeah, I was invited to attend that (as a spectator, of
course) once. Amazingly, I forgot about it.

Ficatu alla riggitana (fegato alla reggina) 
categories: Calabrian, Italian, offal, main
servings: 4

500 g veal liver, sliced
3 onions, sliced thin
400 g potatoes, peeled, in chunks
olive oil
1/2 glass vinegar
s, p

Fry the potatoes in abundant oil. When they are done,
drain and set aside.

Saute the onions in oil, then lower heat, cover the
pan, and cook until golden, adding water as necessary
and stirring from time to time. When the onions are
done and any water is mostly evaporated, raise heat
to high, add the liver pieces and the vinegar, and
cook until browned. Mix in the potatoes, correct
seasoning, and serve hot.
