They don't always, and from what I read this kind of
volcano and this kind of eruption often don't. There is
always risk, and those hikers must have accepted that
risk in some way, though I can see them denying it deep
down inside. The Japanese have a different relationship
with nature than we do - there's still an animistic
streak in their psyche, and people feel a bond with
their surroundings. Apparently people even prayed to
the mountain as a sort of minor deity in better times.

Still 12 or 16 unaccounted for, with the verified toll
of 51. A 150 mph typhoon coming up. If this confluence
of natural disasters involved any Americans, it would be
plastered all over the front pages still.

I've largely been turned away from it always; even when
my father collapsed in front of the tube after a long
day at the lab and asked me to give him a massage, I
wouldn't pay attention to what was on. And that was
almost 50 years ago, when presumably there was somewhat
more content on. I owned a half share in a TV once,
having traded a used air conditioner for it, for a few
years; didn't use it much. And before one of the big
hurricanes I got a 1" screen battery-powered unit to
get civil defense bulletins on (and look at Square One
TV, which I thought intriguing), but that got old
fast - in fact, it got obsoleted almost immediately.

Kids get away with a lot. They may look innocent, but ... .

Calf's Liver With Shallots and Wine-Vinegar Sauce
categories: offal, main, Italian, French
servings: 4

4 sl calf's liver, about 1 1/2 lb
s, p
4 Tb flour
2 Tb vegetable oil
4 Tb butter
3 Tb finely chopped shallots
1 ts finely chopped garlic
1 Tb red-wine vinegar
2 Tb finely chopped parsley

Sprinkle liver with salt and pepper. Dredge thoroughly
on both sides with flour. Shake off excess.

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over high heat.
Add liver slices. Cook about 1 min or until nicely
browned. Turn and cook 1 min longer for rare. Cook
longer for medium-rare and well done.

Remove liver from skillet and keep warm. Pour off
fat from skillet and add butter. Add shallots and
garlic. Cook over high heat, stirring until butter
is hazelnut brown. Quickly add vinegar and bring
to a boil. Pour sauce over liver. Sprinkle with
parsley and serve.
