======================
Hi Nancy,

RH> Frankfurt. When we moved back to the States, Rachel was entering 9th
RH> grade, Deborah 7th so we didn't have to worry about differences in a
RH> school year schedule--until we moved from MA to AZ 6 months later.
RH> Schools in AZ were pretty good, not super great but decent.

NB> When schools are that bad, one can be more easily tempted to home
NB> school, so as to have some control over the learning...

We thought about it before they were born but the support structure
wasn't there. There was some home schooling, but not much choice in
curriculums. Went to Germany in 1986, came back in 1992 and found the
home schooling movement had exploded while we were gone. But, the girls
wouldn't have stood for it then and I would have had trouble with some
of it. We supplimented with the computer (got first one in 1984), trips
to the public libraries and always subscribed to the local newspaper.
Limited tv choices in Germany was a big help too.

NB> RH>> Have you ever counted up how many different schools you
NB> attended? RH>> Both of our girls went to 8 different schools (not
NB> counting different RH>> buildings that were part of the same school
 NB> system like Berlin
 NB> RH>> Elementary and Junior/Senior High).
NB> NB>> I went to 6 different schools. My siblings went to a maximum of
NB> 4 NB>> different schools... My son went to 3 different schools, all
NB> here... NB>> Daddy might have had your girls beat, though...

RH> I suspect, from what you have said, your dad probably went to at least
RH> a dozen (or more) different schools. It's not too much of a deal in
RH> elementary school but moving even once in high school can be rough.

NB> Quite likely... Somewhere, I have a list of all the places he lived,
NB> starting from when he was born... I'd have to dig it out... He did
NB> start college at 16, when they moved to NC, though, so that would have
NB> cut out at least one school... :) And I know about moving during

He sounds like the type of person that would learn well in any kind of
environment. Many people do better with a stable, or somewhat stable,
learning environment so moving often isn't a good choice for them.

NB> high school.. I was entering 12th when we moved to Rochester. Jessie
NB> was going into 10th, and Lesesne into 9th...

And if I figure right, I was going into 8th grade at the same time.

NB> NB>> Lesesne tried to make it clear that she, and only she, was the
 NB> Real NB>> Mommy... (G)

RH> Get that chain of command established early on!

 NB> Absolutely. ;)

Best way to do it--kids tend to respect adults who do so. They'll
grumble at the time but come back in later years to thank the adults.

NB> to RH>> have to listen to. (G)
NB> NB>> Also, like your Rachel, she wasn't that much older than her
 NB> younger NB>> sister... they're only about 2 years apart... :)

RH> Close enough to be close, or fight like cats, then be close again.

NB> I wasn't privy to any of the latter... as far as I heard, they were
NB> pretty happy together... Of course, there were still those older
NB> sisters, most of whom were still around... ;)

It didn't really work that way with me and sister below me tho.

RH> When she was 5, one time Rachel told Deborah that she would be her
RH> sister, but not her friend. A day or so later she relented and decided
RH> to be her friend again. From her tone of voice, it was "I'll be your
RH> sister only because I've no choice in the matter". Overall tho, they
RH> were (and still are) quite close.

NB> Sibling relationships can be interesting... at their best, they are a
NB> true source of support for life.. :)

I know; we're seeing how the sibling relationships are playing out in
older adults now. Some closeness, but not a super tight knit type.
Support, but with differences of opinion, sometimes quite different.

NB> ... No-fat cream cheese is not food; it has no cream, it has no
 NB> cheese.

It has no taste, it has no nutritive value. What was the chemist
thinking when that concoction was put together?

Catch you later,
Ruth
