It's actually a good thing because you learn how to be accurate in copying
important information over the air the first time, amongst other skills.  All
of what you learn is to make you a better operator.

Amateur radio is actually called the "amateur radio service" by the Federal
government.  We are considered a national resource.  The "service" is even
codified into federal code:

From CFR 2020 Title 47 Vol 5 Part 97:

P97.1 Basis and purpose.

The rules and regulations in this part are designed to provide an amateur radio
service having a fundamental purpose as expressed in the following principles:

(a) Recognition and anhancement of the value of the amateur service to the
public a a voluntary non commercial communication service, particularly with
respect to provinding emergency communications.

(b) Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute to
the advancement of the radio art.

(c) Encouragement and improvement of the amateur service through rules which
provide for advancing skills in both the communication and technical phases of
the art.

(d) Expansion of the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of
trained operators, technicians, and electronics experts.

(e) Continuation and extension of the amateur's unique ability to enhance
international good will.

For example, I am certifed to work with FEMA as an emergency communicator if
I'm called upon as I've completed training in the ICS (Incident Command System)
which is what FEMA and the Federal government uses in times of emergency.  I am
also a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service(R), also known as ARES.  I
also love providing public event communications, such as bicycle races, fairs,
marathons, and special events (all of which I've done).

There is something in amateur radio for everyone.

A few interesting things I've picked up along the way about ham radio:

+ The guy who invented the PPP protocol which was and still is used to allow
computers to use dial-up Internet was a ham that wrote PPP to allow his radio
to interface with the Internet.

+ Ham radio operators have been using "cell phones" for years.  We developed
the technology to use with our FM repeaters and hand-held radios and then
Motorola put it into a phone.

+ Many famous people were or are hams: Walter Cronkite, Patty Loveless, Tim
Allen, Art Bell, Joe Walsh, King of Jordan (not the current one, his father).

I could go on and on and on, but I won't. :)

      Title: Grilled Salmon & Cheddar Sandwiches
 Categories: Cheese, Fish, Main dish
      Yield: 4 Servings

      1 lb Salmon; 1 cn
     10 oz Cheddar; md, *
    1/4 c  Mayonnaise
      1 t  Onion; grated
      1 t  Lemon juice

  *    Slice the Cheddar Cheese into 4 slices of 2 1/2 ozs each.

  ++++ Mix the salmon with the onion, lemon juice, and mayonnaise.
  Spread the mixture on thick slices of French bread and top with a
  slice of cheddar cheese.  Add a top slice of bread and butter both

  brown the other side, and the cheese is melted.  Serve hot.
