ML>> In the relatively early days of the science; although it
ML>> has been practiced for a hundred years, it was rare until,
ML>> as you say, the heyday of computers.
NB>> Not too early... I think they'd been doing surgeries that way for
NB>> maybe 5, 10 years before... but I did see the beginning of the curve,

ML> I'm sure that it was not lost on the ancients that the
ML> smaller the incision the easier the recovery.

I'm sure, also... :) Getting from the realization to the reality was
the trickier part... :)

ML> This was gotten from PubMed (an NIH project) -
ML> Spaner SJ, Warnock GL, A brief history of endoscopy, laparoscopy,
ML> and laparoscopic surgery. J Laparoendosc Adv Surg Tech A.
 ML> 1997 Dec;7(6):369-73.
ML> The first effective open-tube endoscope was developed
ML> in 1853 by Desormeaux. This instrument was used to
ML> examine the urethra and the bladder. In the late 1800's,
ML> other physicians including Kussmaul and Nitze refined
ML> the original endoscopic models and began utilizing their
ML> new tools in their medical practice. Laparoscopy or
ML> endoscopically examining the peritoneal cavity was
ML> first attempted in 1901 by George Kelling who called
ML> this examining procedure "Celioscopy". In the early
ML> 1930's, the first reports of laparoscopic interventions
ML> for nondiagnostic purposes were published. Initial
ML> procedures included lysis of abdominal adhesions and
ML> diagnostic biopsies of abdominal organs under direct
 ML> visualization. Throughout the 1960's and 1970's,
ML> laparoscopy became a vital part of gynecological
 ML> practice.

Even with my initial diagnostic laparoscopy, the doctor did do some
small amount of lysis of adhesions that he saw on my fallopian tubes.
But the actual infertility surgery was done with a full incision.

ML> Despite these technological advances, it was
ML> not until after 1986, following the development of a
ML> video computer chip that allowed the magnification and
ML> projection of images onto television screens, that the
ML> techniques of laparoscopic surgery truly became
ML> integrated into the discipline of general surgery. The
ML> first laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed on a human
ML> patient was done in 1987 by the French physician Mouret.

That's about the timeline I was remembering...

ML> So yours was early, but people were trying (with what
ML> success the article doesn't say) for 50-60 years before
 ML> that.

I imagine that there was some success, particularly with operations that
didn't need one to look behind things, or to remove larger bits...
When I went for my gallbladder surgery, the doctor did tell me that they
had been having good results with the laparoscopic cholecystectomies,
and that they were reasonably routine already... Mine was less than ten
years after the first one... but the first (or at least among the very
first) at that hospital using a color screen....

NB>> Although, my cousin did make liver that I normally would consider
NB>> way over-cooked that actually was still edible and not nasty at
NB>> all... It was in a gravy, and she made it on top of the stove in
NB>> a skillet... didn't pay that much attention to the details,
ML> I hadn't thought of liver in the same way as squid, but
ML> maybe it's another manifestation of the 2 minutes or 2
 ML> hours rule.

Dunno... might be... Pressure cooked, liver was nasty, despite the
self-generated flour gravy in the pot... ;)

NB>>> Exactly. And the sooner, the better... ;)
ML>> One hopes. With computers working as fast as they do, that
ML>> day seems to be just around the corner.
NB>> As long as the proper data is fed in for the computer to digest... ;)
ML> One always hopes that. Data collection, though as important
ML> as any other aspect of research, is often left in the hands
ML> of the inexperienced or the uninsightful.

Too true, that... and garbage in leads to garbage out...
