============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> own house. RH>> Ouch, yes, but true so Dad acquesced. We'd been
NB> fussing at him to RH>> get one put in but it took Don's blunt
NB> statement to get it done.
NB> NB>> And his seeing it from his wife's perspective probably had an
NB> NB>> influence on his understanding the necessity of the ramp... as
NB> well NB>> as for the stair lift...

RH> The "aha!" moment! Mom only used the ramp a few times before she went

 NB> Exactly... :)

Better it was there, than the way they used to get her down the few
steps from the house. Getting down tho, wasn't nearly as bad as getting
her back in, especially over the stoop at the door. Dad had trouble
helping Mom by himself so he usually had someone to help both of them
but it was still a "hold yur breath until they're down safely" time.

 RH> into the nursing home but it was there for her. Dad has used it a lot;
RH> he broke his hip last year and now has to use a walker all the time.
RH> It's easier to get outside and down to the driveway (to go out in the
RH> car or check the mail box) using the ramp instead of the stairs.

NB> For sure. I tend to use ramps rather than stairs when available,
NB> since stairs are often a problem for me, even though I'm not in
NB> wheelchair or using a walker... with a walker, a ramp is just so much
NB> more convenient, and probably safer as well... :)

I'll use either or, probably steps more often right now.

RH> Don is planning to take it down when he moves into the house; I
RH> hope he stows it somewhere so he can have it put back in place when
RH> he gets to the age he needs it. Same with the chair lift.

NB> One never knows when one might need such a thing... If it's already
NB> been purchased, one would be very wise to hang onto it, if not just
NB> leaving it in place... :)

I can see leaving the ramp in place but taking the chair lift out until
he needs it. It would facilitate his moving into the house if the lift
(or at least the chair) was out of the way. Some furniture is coming out
of the upstairs rooms shortly (if not already); I hope the chair was
moved for that as the stuff is big/bulky.

 NB> RH>> I cooked for both
NB> RH>> brothers, Dad, Steve and myself the one night when we were up in
NB> May. RH>> I made a beef stew, set a loaf of bread with it and both
NB> brothers ate RH>> like they'd not eaten in months, instead of hours.
NB> NB>> Well, there, I think you might have an indication that at least
NB> they NB>> both enjoyed your cooking... ;) And that might be a touch
 NB> point for NB>> discussing cooking/eating in general... :)

RH> It's a start anyway. Neither one said anything about liking or not
RH> liking the meal but the way they tucked into it, no words were
 RH> neccessary.

NB> Exactly. If they didn't like it, they certainly made a good show..
 NB> (G)

I suspect not having to cook for themselves made it more enjoyable too.
Steve started helping me cut up the meat but sharpened the knife before
beginning. He got a finger in the way while cutting it so I took over.
Nothing serious but enough to need a band aid. Finding a decent knife in
that house is a challenge, same with potato peelers.

NB> NB>> The thought of one meal ending up having to be eaten for many
NB> days is NB>> rather daunting for many people... especially if they
NB> never got the NB>> concept of planovers vs leftovers... ;)

RH> I'll usually let Steve know if I plan a dish to go for several meals
RH> or not. If there are sufficient (unplanned) left overs, I will decide
RH> as I'm putting them away if I want to use them for lunch, another meal
RH> during the week or put them in the freezer for another meal down the
RH> road. Left overs from the beef stew went into a box in the fridge
RH> freezer for fairly immediate use and a box (or was it 2?) for the
RH> cellar freezer for Dad to have down the road.

NB> That sort of thinking is totally foreign to some, though... as we both
NB> know well.. :) Having figured out planning for leftovers, it's a lot
NB> easier to deal with unexpected leftovers... will we eat this quickly
NB> for a lunch, or should it be tucked into freezer containers to
 NB> reappear
NB> later for another meal...? Richard's not keen on having the same meal
NB> appear two nights in a row, but doesn't mind it reappearing a couple
NB> nights later, so something that would keep (and maybe even benefit
NB> from steeping) for a day or so could just go into the fridge... But
NB> that's a sort of planning and thinking that one has to learn.. :)

I try to not bring out the same thing two nights in a row unless we get
pushed for time. Sometimes it's easier to reheat than to cook a fresh
meal. Yesterday Steve smoked a rack of ribs--we had half for supper and
put the other half into the freezer for another meal. He also made a
pastrami (smoked corned beef) at the same time.

Catch you later,
Ruth
