The "fun" part is figuring out what's essential, what isn't. I think I
can pack up most of my spice cabinet, part of the pantry, parts of the
upper cupbpards in the kitchen..................sure as I do, we'll need
(or want) something that's been packed away.

We saw that our favorite prime rib place was doing an Octoberfest
special menu (don't know when they started, when they'll end the
promotion) while we were out today. We'd thought about going for lunch
but went for supper instead, so we could try the German specials. I
ordered jagerschnitzel, no mashed potatoes, sides of German potato salad
and red cabbage. Steve ordered rouladen, with mashed potatoes & gravy
and a side of pickled beets. My meat came out tender, on a bed of
creamed spinach (not something I would have done), with more mushrooms
(good) than gravy (would have liked a bit more). It was breaded, like
wiener schnitzel tho! The creamed spinach was so-so; I could have done
without it. The potato salad tasted good but it was cold, not hot, as I
would have expected. I've had it cold before, but that's not the norm.
OTOH, the red cabbage was quite good.

Steve said his rouladen was very good also, no comment about the mashed
potatoes but he ate them all. The pickled beets were good also. (We
split the beets, potato salad and cabbage, taking home some of the first
2, as well as half the meat.) Dessert was a shared piece of Black Forest
Cake--cake was authentic, cherry layer were more on the marischino type
in an almost frozen syrup/glaze/sauce--not sure what it was supposed to
be. A light layer of milk chocolate whipped cream was also between the
layers, with more on the sides (thin layer) and top (thick layer). All
in all, I think we'll stick with getting prime rib there; this wasn't
bad but it wasn't quite as good as it could have been.  The nearest
German restaurant is in Durham or Chapel Hill I think, maybe Cary, so it
was good to try something local, just wish they'd taken it up a notch or
two.
