RH> Better it was there, than the way they used to get her down the few
RH> steps from the house. Getting down tho, wasn't nearly as bad as
RH> getting her back in, especially over the stoop at the door. Dad had
RH> trouble helping Mom by himself so he usually had someone to help both
RH> of them but it was still a "hold yur breath until they're down safely"
 RH> time.

Or until they were safely up and over... ;) Richard has brought people
in wheelchairs up and down stairs at church many a time... there's a
ramp for getting from outside into the main sanctuary, and smaller ramps
for other places on that floor... but to get someone down into the
fellowship hall below, one has to use at least one part-flight of stairs.

 RH>> into the nursing home but it was there for her. Dad has used it a lot;
RH>> he broke his hip last year and now has to use a walker all the time.
RH>> It's easier to get outside and down to the driveway (to go out in the
RH>> car or check the mail box) using the ramp instead of the stairs.
NB>> For sure. I tend to use ramps rather than stairs when available,
NB>> since stairs are often a problem for me, even though I'm not in
NB>> wheelchair or using a walker... with a walker, a ramp is just so much
NB>> more convenient, and probably safer as well... :)

RH> I'll use either or, probably steps more often right now.

Depends on how many stairs and how well my legs/ankles are functioning.

RH>> Don is planning to take it down when he moves into the house; I
RH>> hope he stows it somewhere so he can have it put back in place when
RH>> he gets to the age he needs it. Same with the chair lift.
NB>> One never knows when one might need such a thing... If it's already
NB>> been purchased, one would be very wise to hang onto it, if not just
NB>> leaving it in place... :)

RH> I can see leaving the ramp in place but taking the chair lift out
RH> until he needs it. It would facilitate his moving into the house if
RH> the lift (or at least the chair) was out of the way. Some furniture
RH> is coming out of the upstairs rooms shortly (if not already); I hope
RH> the chair was moved for that as the stuff is big/bulky.

Probably depends on how trivial or not moving the chair out of the way
is... and if there were any alternative ways of getting the furniture
out...

RH>> It's a start anyway. Neither one said anything about liking or not
RH>> liking the meal but the way they tucked into it, no words were
 RH>> neccessary.
NB>> Exactly. If they didn't like it, they certainly made a good show..
 NB>> (G)

RH> I suspect not having to cook for themselves made it more enjoyable
 RH> too.

That's always a factor... :)

RH> Steve started helping me cut up the meat but sharpened the knife
RH> before beginning. He got a finger in the way while cutting it so I took
RH> over. Nothing serious but enough to need a band aid. Finding a decent
RH> knife in that house is a challenge, same with potato peelers.

And a dull knife can be more dangerous... So all the potato peelers
are on their last legs and/or gone missing...? ;)

NB>> That sort of thinking is totally foreign to some, though... as we
NB>> both know well.. :) Having figured out planning for leftovers,
NB>> it's a lot easier to deal with unexpected leftovers... will we eat
NB>> this quickly for a lunch, or should it be tucked into freezer
NB>> containers to reappear later for another meal...? Richard's not
NB>> keen on having the same meal appear two nights in a row, but doesn't
NB>> mind it reappearing a couple nights later, so something that would
NB>> keep (and maybe even benefit from steeping) for a day or so could
NB>> just go into the fridge... But that's a sort of planning and
NB>> thinking that one has to learn.. :)

RH> I try to not bring out the same thing two nights in a row unless we
RH> get pushed for time. Sometimes it's easier to reheat than to cook a
RH> fresh meal. Yesterday Steve smoked a rack of ribs--we had half for
RH> supper and put the other half into the freezer for another meal. He
RH> also made a pastrami (smoked corned beef) at the same time.

Makes sense to use the smoker for more than one thing at a time.... and
then have them available for later meals without having to take the time
then... :)
