That's the trick ... what it would cost in terms of space and retro-fitting to
bring this 40-year-old can up to present day safety standards. And the need is
less here that it is in your neck of the woods.

I seem to remember our absent former moderator singing the praises of such.
IIRC they will run on either wood pellets or grains of corn.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Summer Corn & Cod Chowder
 Categories: Soups, Seafood, Vegetables, Dairy, Pork
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      3 sl Center-cut bacon; halved
           - across
      8    Scallions; thin sliced,
           - whites & greens separated
  1 1/2 ts Fine chopped garlic
      2 tb All-purpose flour
      2 md Yukon gold potatoes; peeled,
           - in 1/2" dice
      2 c  Milk
      2 c  Chicken broth
      2 ts Fine chopped fresh thyme
    3/4 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Fresh ground black pepper
    3/4 lb Cod; skinned, chopped
  2 1/2 c  Cups corn kernels
    1/4 c  Half & half
 
  In a large saucepan, cook bacon over medium heat until
  crisp, 6 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate;
  crumble.
  
  In same pan, sautO scallion whites for 2 minutes. Add
  garlic; sautO 1 minute. Add flour; cook, stirring
  frequently, 2 minutes. Stir in potatoes, milk, broth,
  thyme, salt and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to
  medium-low; simmer 10 minutes. Stir in fish, corn and 2/3
  bacon; simmer 5 minutes. Stir in half-and-half and 3/4
  scallion greens; simmer 2 minutes.
  
  Ladle into bowls and garnish with remaining scallion
  greens and bacon.
