Of course if it was "perfect" we couldn't afford it. Bv)=

SH> There are times I can do better work myself though.

I am fortunate in that my brother (Phil) and his son-in-law are in the pipe
trades. Brad re-plumbed my current abode for me after I bought the materials.
When Phil and I replaced the water heater the jostling of the pipes, etc.
knocked 40 years of build-up loose in the pipes and I had no water pressure in
the shower and no water at all in the kitchen. Gosh, it's nice to be able to
take a hot shower at full pressure. And wash the (few) dishes in hot soapy
water - then rinse them.

 DD> The search continues.

 NB> Hopefully you'll find a keeper pretty soon... :)

DD> Got another, in a somewhat better neighbourhood, a bit bigger. It has
DD> a recent roof. But, the Realtor blurb says "renters were not kind to
DD> this property". Cosmetics I can handle. Paint is (relatively)
DD> inexpensive. And no basement to worry about - it's on a slab. Phil is
DD> going to do a walk-around on it today whilst I am at work. We'll see
 DD> what eventuates.

SH> One of the places we looked at was a rental. It would have needed
SH> significant work. It had a rather large deck that was in poor shape. It
SH> did have a garage, but the interior layout was not what Ruth wanted. It
SH> also would have needed significant work on the siding as it was
 SH> water-damaged masonite siding.

This guy has vinyl siding and aluminum storm windows. But the walk-around
reveals that a couple of the windows will need replacing, new carpet in two
rooms and the gutters are in severe need of climbing a ladder and scooping out
all the leaves, etc. If I get the place something like a "Gutter Topper" will
be installed. Haven't looked around inside yet.

SH> As for paint, it sure is not as inexpensive as it used to be. I just
SH> paid $24.27 plus tax (with 10% military discount, $26.97 undiscounted)
SH> for a gallon of white exterior semi-gloss paint/primer. It was for a
SH> hand rail for the new place (needed to pass VA Appraisal inspection)
SH> which the seller did not want to install since there was not one when
SH> he purchased the house. At least the house trim is white, so I can use
SH> it for touch-up when we get the place.

You can thank the EPA for the increased cost of paint, etc. I used to be able
to buy a gallon of Dupont Dulux (automotive) Enamel for around $30. Last time I
checked a quart of automotive enamel was upwards of #75. No wonder collision
repair costs are through the roof.

SH> I hope the walk-around goes well. I hope you find a house to your
 SH> liking.

SH> I saw the title and though of you. I have not made this yet, but intend
SH> to do so once we get moved.

 SH> Title: Drum Bread
 SH> Categories: American, Breads
 SH> Yield: 1 Batch

Other than doing the bread in the smoker ........... looks fairly standard.

This is truly "Drum Bread" as it is my own recipe. It's really great warm from
the oven, slathered with butter and enclosing thick slices of fresh, home-grown
tomato. Mayonnaise optional.
