Hi Janis,

>> > A warm hat helps either situation tho.

>> Yes :) I have a few somewhere here... have to dig them up before we
>> get really cold weather. I _think_ I know where they are haha I'm

JK> > I'll be grabbing one tomorrow when I go to the farmer's market. I
JK> know > just where it is.

JK> I found them though we're still too warm for them here. My favorite
JK> is a little cloche hat my daughter knitted for me. That's something I
JK> never bothered to learn.. I can sew and crochet, but never bothered to
JK> learn knitting. She really makes some incredible things.

My mom used to knit; I tried it (and crocheting) but keep coming back to
the sewing machine.

>> laughing because Ron always says I'm remembering places I kept things
>> like 20 years ago, not currently :) :) Brain warp I guess :)

JK> > And how many houses ago? We didn't need them in HI so kept them all
JK> > packed away, until we moved to GA. Our first winter there seemed
JK> like it > was one of the coldest ones we've ever had, but that was
JK> because we were > used to HI weather.

JK> Yes, I know what you mean ... when we came back to NY from Louisville,
JK> it was similar (though not as extreme as your weather change I'm
 JK> sure).

HI temperatures didn't vary that much, at least on Oahu, (more so on
some of the other islands). If it got below 70, it felt cold. (G) If our
associate pastor wore a long sleeved shirt, it was cold.

>> time we've used it recently was when we had to pick up my grandson at
>> college and he's at a different college now. I guess we just never
>> used it much to start with :)

JK> > We don't have a land line, just our cells.

 JK> We're just the opposite.. (g)

It's handy--I had texted a friend about her child's allergies before
leaving home to grocery shop, she called me while I was in the store.
Also nice to get pictures of the grandkids. (G)

JK> > It was too dark when we came
JK> > home from running some errands last night to try to use the
JK> camera--we > saw 2 adult deer, 2 young ones (probably mothers and
JK> spring fawns) in > the neighbors yard. They ran to our front yard
JK> until they saw us pull > in, then ran out back. Steve saw the
JK> reflection from their eyes when he > went out back to take care of
JK> something. I don't think any were albinos > tho.

JK> It's always nice to see deer though.. well, except on the road I
JK> guess. Ron has got a great eye for them though since he grew up in
JK> Sullivan county, so he's never had a problem, thankfully.

I spot them quite often; I am always looking, especially after dark on
some of the roads around here.

JK> > I hope so as well, especially if we have to make a trip up there
 JK> during > the winter.

JK> I can understand that one. I hope your weather and NY's weather treat
JK> you well for your journey.

Hopefully we won't have to go up over the winter but I suspect we
probably will, given my folk's health.

>> > I'll get out with a shovel and pot at some point before we move.

>> Very neat.

JK> > Got to start my kitchen garden going in a new spot.

JK> Yes, it is handy having my little box of herbs... I always miss having
JK> fresh spices in the dead of winter, but the freezer helps there.

It has been nice; this is the first place we've had the variety already
planted for us. I've used more rosemary in the past 5 years than in all
the other years combined.

>> There are blackberry plants as well in far back of the property in
>> Windsor as well as some asparagus roots that should sprout in the
>> early spring. I should point them all out to the realestate agent,
>> but I'd bet she has enough to remember with her job (grin).

JK> > Make a list/map and post it on the fridge or some other obvious spot
 JK> in > the kitchen.

JK> Yes, I did that.. it should help whoever buys the house. I did it
JK> because the previous owner of that house didn't leave a note at all
JK> and I mostly discovered things here and there over the seasons when we
JK> lived there. Over here in Slaterville Springs, the owner took us on a
JK> nature walk essentially :) He was a horticulturist at Cornell, so he
JK> planted some amazingly beautiful flowering plants. They bloom in
JK> sequence all spring and summer.

Nice to have had the tour; it let you know what's what and where without
having to do the "discover it for yourself" thing. (G)

JK> >Our thyme didn't make it thru last winter but we didn't
JK> > replant, guess we will in the new place. It was one of the herbs
JK> that > was here when we moved in so nothing we'd planted.

JK> Sounds like your kitchen garden will be really nice :)

Hopefully so.
