Hi Janis,

>> > So you did well with the propane......

>> It clobbered us when it was time to get the two large tanks filled.
>> Thankfully at the time we weren't paying two mortgages though :)

JK> > And that you didn't have to fill the tanks every week........

JK> Yes, if the propane furnace had to heat more than those few rooms, it
JK> would have been a nightmare, only because it was so expensive to get
JK> those two huge tanks filled. I'll have to ask Ron later how big they
JK> were. Offhand I'm thinking they were as tall as I am.

Were they fat, as well as tall? I've seen some tanks that were tall but
skinny, others were tall and fatter.

>> > Prices are coming down now; we're seeing gas for under $3.00/gallon

>> I think it's the same here... so strange :)

 JK> > I'm not complaining tho.

JK> We went out yesterday to get Ron to the doc, and I think gas here in
JK> the Binghamton/Ithaca area was about 3.15 or so.

With a $.05 credit at Lowe's (grocery) today, we paid $2.78. We did some
shopping yesterday; when it was totalled, we were under $25. short of
another nickel's credit but decided to wait a bit before doing any more
shopping there. We probably will get it next week.

JK> > But I'll have to get used to cooking on a smooth top stove again.
JK> I'm > going to have to re-learn what I learned in Savannah and forgot
JK> when we > moved up here.

JK> My mom loved her electric smooth top stove. It was nice to use when I
JK> had one... very even... my fears that the 'low' setting wouldn't get
JK> low enough turned out not to be true. I guess that would depend on
JK> the stove model/age, etc. I did have to get used to it when I had an
JK> electric smooth top stove though, I know what you mean there :)

I wasn't thrilled with it but one good thing is that there's no holes
for food to fall underneath the coils. I'll get used to it again, and
maybe even come to like it.

>> Unsalted "saltines" did it for me... but IIRC sometimes nothing
>> helped. :)

JK> > I only had one bad day--when Steve made me eat something and I
JK> really > didn't feel good. I lost it, had a touch of a flu bug. Steve
JK> came down > with it a few days later and then understood why I didn't
JK> want anything > to eat.

JK> That makes more sense (g). Right now, in Ithaca the flu that Ron has
JK> is all over Ithaca according to my daughter. I haven't gotten it
JK> probably since one of the meds I take for MS is actually a flu
JK> vaccine. Ron usually gets a flu vaccine but didn't this year, just
JK> because we didn't think of it.. he's doing better tonight now that
JK> he's on an antibiotic for his chest.

He should have gotten a flu shot. I got mine in September, had a
doctor's appointment and it was offered, so I took it.

>> The crockpot I have is very small... compared to some I've seen. I
>> forget the volume it can handle.

JK> > This was put out for the original 3 quart crock pots.

JK> One of these days I'll measure what the small one I have can handle.
JK> I may use it then since some days I cook just for the two of us.

I've got a baby (I think it's 1.5 quarts) crock pot that's nice for the
2 of us for little to no left overs type meals.

>> pots. I used to use my cast iron dutch oven for sauce but decided I
>> liked the results better with the farberware.

JK> > I've got T-Fal stainless steel; I like the pots but not as thrilled
JK> with > the fry pans. Cast iron isn't as good for sauce as the acid
 JK> from the
JK> > tomato will cook out some of the seasoning.

JK> I think I have two T-Fal fry pans here. One is very small and the
JK> other is a normal 9-inch. The small one is good for a quick fried
JK> egg though I don't use it very often. IIRC, they were in one of a

I wanted a couple of non reactive pots to use for canning but we ended
up getting a whole new set of cookware. (G)

JK> bunch I received when my
JK> mother-in-law died, though really we bought most of the pots I've got.
JK> I think I purchased most of the cast iron ones in Louisville, since I
JK> found a great shop there with so many shapes and sizes I hadn't seen
JK> up north, and all for a great price. I couldn't resist :)

I think I would have had a hard time resisting as well. (G) I've got
several cast iron fry pans and a dutch oven that all get used regularly.

>>> > Hopefully it'll sell fast.

JK> No wonder-immediate-interest yet.. guess it will take some time. (g)
JK> It's what I expected really.. it's a "lot" of house, so it might take
JK> a while. At least it's on the market now.

On the market and people are looking--good signs.

>> From what I understand in
>> speaking to people in the area, houses go really fast in the area
>> because of Cornell University. I guess if we ever decide to sell this
>> house, we won't have to worry though right now that's hard to imagine
>> :)

JK> > Sounds good. The one we're buying has been on the market for a few
JK> > months. A couple of the places we looked at have sold, and closed,
JK> but > we asked for a longer time to get all the ducks in a row.

JK> That's understandable. More time to plan and think :)

Plan out a bit better where things will be placed.

JK> Our first snow of the season today ... the forcasters called it snow
JK> showers, but it stuck on the bushes and trees ...It will be gone
JK> tomorrow though as they're forcasting 45F tomorrow and perhaps 50 on
JK> Sunday or Monday. I am not ready for snow :)

I'll wait a bit for snow. We're supposed to be very cold the latter part
of next week, but I think dry.

>> > Actually, I didn't know about it until after the fact. I just knew
>> it > was really raining hard, and noisly as is typical in a mobile
>> home.

>> I bet you were glad that's all you had to deal with.

JK> > Yes, definately. We didn't have much stuff with us but would have
JK> hated > to lose any of it.

JK> I'm sure. The worst that's ever happened was the frozen pipes in
JK> Windsor, and thankfully we weren't living there when it happened last
JK> spring. We did have some things get destroyed that we were kind of
JK> not ready to move here, but it wasn't anything important.

We've had frozen, but never burst, pipes.
