It's all a complicated mess, and I don't see much can be
generalized from what happened to me; it's not even clear
whether next time (heaven forfend) will or should be
approached the same way.

If they were going to put a PICC in they should have done
it either during the second hospitalization or as part of
the third admission. Not waiting until every vein was blown.

Avoidance is a good strategy. When the rather intrusive
admissions interview asked how I coped with stress, I said
"avoidance."

Over a hundred sticks, not counting forty-eight (I said fifty
before, but this time I counted) finger pricks. Think about it.

It is unclear what causes me to bleed - all my factors are
in the normal range, but most of them are scraping the bottom.
I figure that when they all hit bottom, I bleed. Every Boston
hospital adventure I've had has featured bleeding of some
degree (and every time but one of life-threatening severity).

Things evolve. There's this song and dance about ebola
evolving quickly to be transmissible airborne. Of course,
everything about ebola appears to be a song and dance.
More people get killed from falling off cliffs and perhaps
out of bed than have succumbed to that (scary) disease.

I can't see starting probiotics during the course of the
antibiotics, especially with my scorched-earth regimen.
When time comes to recolonize, maybe when the cillins
start wearing off, tipping the balance in favor of the
good guys make sense, but not when the poisons are in
full force.

I tried that - had a friend bring coconut milk yogurt.
It was pretty nasty.

Beef stew
cat: Singapore, main
servings: 4 to 6

1 kg beef chuck, 1" cubes
1 ts dried thyme (or 3 sprigs fresh)
1/3 cc flour
3 potatoes, 1" cubes
500 g mushrooms, sliced roughly
- (I used a mix of portobello, swiss browns and white buttons)
2 carrots, 1" cubes
2 ribs celery, 1" cubes
1 md onion, 1 cm cubes
1 shallot, minced finely
2 cloves garlic, minced finely
2 Tb tomato paste
4 c beef stock
3 Tb olive oil
h - Marinade
2 c young dry red wine
5 cloves garlic, smashed
2 carrots, 1 cm cubes
2 ribs celery, 1 cm cubes
2 bay leaves
1 ts sweet paprika
1 ts salt
1 ts pepper
1 lg onion, 1 cm cubes

1) Combine the beef with the marinade for at
least 4 hr, or preferably overnight. To cook,
remove beef from marinade, reserving the
strained marinade for later.

2) Just before cooking, lightly salt and
flour the beef. Pop onto a pan with olive
oil to brown it all over on medium-high heat.
Do not flour the beef until just before you
pop it onto the pan. Also, don't crowd the
pan, otherwise the heat gets dissipated. Work
in batches (I worked with 4 batches) if
necessary, and set aside the browned beef
for later.

3) Leaving behind 3 Tb beef drippings, fry
onions, shallots and garlic until translucent
and fragrant, about 1 min.

4) Add carrots and celery, and continue to
fry about 1 min.

5) Add mushrooms and continue to fry 1 min.

6) Lower heat and add tomato paste, frying
until fragrant, about 1 min.

7) Add strained marinade, increase heat to
medium-high, and bubble until reduced by half.

8) Return beef to pan.

9) Add stock and thyme, bring to a boil, and
then lower heat to a simmer for 6 hr.

10) In the last 1/2 hr, increase heat to
medium and add in the potatoes.

11) Serve with a sprinkle of paprika or
sour cream if preferred.
