He's gone on another tack - he had half a beer and
enjoyed the effect (I don't begrudge him this, and
it's got to be cheaper and more harmless than all
those other medications he's been prescribed -
though I am leery about the self-medication aspect
of alcohol abuse); on the other hand, he said that
he had an urge to jump in front of a bus - whether
that's just to get my attention (didn't work, so
he mentioned it again) or an impulse that he really
had I guess I'll have to make further inquiries about.

That kind of makes sense, otherwise anyone could claim
to be his wife in order to steal benefits.

That's what I said when reporting the nonreceipt, and
not only did they not seem to care, they explicitly
did not care.

Anything's a possibility in that house.

There are many secondary IDs that can be accepted as
one of a pair, lacking one of the standard primary
ones; and sometimes a less rules-driven checker will
accept just one. I've been let on airplanes with a
nongovernmental picture ID before; and it might be
possible to use a government-issued nonpicture ID
such as my no-expiration-date firearms permit - in
which case one may be subject to additional scrutiny.
In fact, to fly, the law says that no ID is actually
necessary. The TSA regulations, which seem to be more
for the benefit of the airline companies than in the
interests of actual security, say that if you fly
without valid ID (there are a number of kinds listed,
plus others are required to be accepted if they
adhere to certain guidelines - for example, an ID that
is not on the list qualifies if it has been issued by
a government authority, has a conforming photo, and
has a current address) you will be subject to an
arbitrary level of search both of your person and (oddly)
of the Internet and law enforcement databases.

1 lb kale, cleaned, stems removed
8 oz linguica sausage, thinly sliced
- sub Spanish chorizo sausage or mild Italian sausage
- removed from its casing and broken into small pieces
1/4 c extra-virgin olive oil
1 lg yellow onion, peeled and cut into small dice
3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
1 1/2 ts coarse salt
2 lb white or red potatoes
2 qt chicken stock or water
Freshly ground black pepper

Working with several at a time, stack the kale leaves
on top of one another, roll them into a tight cigar
shape, and slice them crosswise as thinly as possible
into strips.

In a heavy pot over medium heat, brown the sausage.
Transfer it to a plate and set aside. Reduce the heat
to medium-low and add the oil. Add the onion and garlic,
season with salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until
the onion is soft, about 10 min.

Meanwhile, peel the potatoes if desired, halve
lengthwise, then slice thinly crosswise. Add the
potatoes to the pot, stir to coat well with oil, and
cook 2 or 3 min. Add the prepared kale, sausage, liquid,
and pepper. The kale will seem tall in your pot, but it
cooks down. Use a wooden spoon to turn the vegetables
over gently from the bottom and mix them all together.
Increase the heat to medium-high and bring almost to a
boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover
partially, and simmer until the potatoes are tender,
about 30 min. Adjust seasonings and serve hot.
