ML>>> I am sure that the more ticklish procedures are left to
ML>>> the experts, but more and more is becoming routinized.
 NB>>> Probably true. :)
ML>> It's a way to stretch resources and perhaps not coincidentally
ML>> to deprofessionalize activities that once required advanced
 ML>> training and some discretion.
NB>> Stretching resources I'd go along with... as to the latter, depending
NB>> on who is actually allowed to use the equipment, it might still require
 NB>> advanced training
ML> Might, but by the looks of what they were doing, the
ML> machinery is much less ticklish than it used to be,
ML> and the visualizations are better, so the range of
ML> potential users is much greater.

Technology sometimes makes things simpler... :) I've seen some
machines that seem simple enough that I'd be able to figure them out...

NB>> I was just thinking last night that one thing that seems
NB>> to have gone by the wayside is the nurse's cap... :)
ML> Many of the nurses and aides, especially the young,
ML> pretty, vain ones, had long uncontrolled hair. I was
ML> always taught that in all such professions hair should
ML> be put up for hygienic reasons. Maybe not so much any
ML> more - either people wash their hair more frequently
ML> or the amount of bug transmission is minimal.

Or some precautions just aren't being pushed as much. I could see
having long hair tied back out of the way just to keep it out of the
way... out of the soup, out of the patient's face, not in the way while
one is trying to do a blood draw... and so forth...

NB>> Apparently some disagreement or variation at least in the perception
NB>> of how sick you actually were... But then there's more than one
NB>> criteria for putting in the more advanced IV options, I suppose...
NB>> like the unavailability of usable veins... ;0
ML> Probably - my numbers were all verkackte, but I was
ML> still strong as a horse. Now there's been a flipflop
ML> that I hope is short-durationed - my signs are fine,
ML> but I don't feel like doing, like, anything at all.

Delayed reaction, perhaps...? The body telling you it still needs
downtime to finish healing, maybe, as well...? Healing takes a LOT of
energy...

NB>>> That sounds like they may have decided the antibiotics were causing
 NB>>> some of the problem....?
ML>> The surgery department never admits anything.
 NB>> Sigh.
ML> There are two angels in heaven gossiping, one works
ML> in the inner offices, the other maybe out with the
ML> public or something, The one says, you know, we've
ML> been having a bit of a problem with the Big Guy's
ML> attitude lately. Why, what's that, says the other.
ML> Well, says the first, he's beginning to think he's
 ML> a surgeon.

Ha.

NB>> be creative, since originally the doctor accused me of "making it hurt
NB>> on the way over" to the appointment... I fired that doctor, and only
NB>> went to another when obviously whatever it was wasn't going away... By
NB>> then, my muscles told that new doctor what pain I was in, my mind
NB>> wasn't registering it much any more... That's part of why the pain
NB>> scale means little to me...
ML> Doctors can fail to see what's in front of their
 ML> noses sometimes.

Sometimes they don't look at the right places, sometimes they've got
preconceived ideas...

ML>> If I can have the thing removed after Singapore and before
ML>> the spring, that would be ideal.
NB>> Do you think they'll do it electively...?
 ML>> If it's not laparascopic and outpatient, I won't
ML>> let it be done, so I guess so.

Hope you have a cooperative doc... :)

NB>> I'm just going by what the cardio doctors have been telling us about
NB>> Richard's condition. They are calling it Afib still, even though the
NB>> heartbeat is well in normal range, the only bad thing about it now is
 NB>> the irregularity...
ML> That might be a shorthand for something that goes
ML> with A-fib, but A-fib is technically just the term
 ML> for the tachycardia.

Maybe. If I think of it (in three months when the next appt is), I
might bring that up with the doc for clarification... :)

ML>> Built-in unit? They tried to convince me to have one installed,
ML>> but the discomfort and inconvenience prevented me from letting
 ML>> them do so.
NB>> No, a cardioversion is an external procedure... shock the heart into
NB>> stopping, then shock it back to beating.
ML> One of the procedures I refused was the implanting
ML> of a cardioverter. Back then, they were the size of
ML> a deck of cards; now they're more like candy bar
ML> size; in either case they do the same job as the big
ML> boys in the hospital. I pointed out that if I were
ML> to play a concert, the thing would almost inevitably
ML> go off, and that would be the end of the concert.

Ah. They weren't talking about that, unless that is now called an
implanted defibrillator... Richard wasn't wanting anything implanted,
either... but they were talking possibilities (from their point of
view)... :)

ML> Speaking of which, the administrator of the gig that
ML> I am playing hooky from this December sent me an
ML> e-mail hoping that I'll work with them next time.

So I guess begging off this time didn't put you in their bad graces
after all.. :)

ML> This might be an okay recipe, but it still rubs me
ML> the wrong way. Also, there's way too much red bell
ML> and celery for the garlic. I'd omit the eggs, too,
ML> and kick away any pretense of "carbonara." M's note.

Add more garlic to balance the celery...? Didn't look much like a
carbonara to me, even with my limited knowledge... :)
