100% of all convicted terrorists were 18 years or older
when they performed their misdeeds. Of course, 0% of
these were possessed of a valid high school ID at the
time. It must be pointed out that your array of rights
and responsibilities and the things you can do and
have done to you change radically on your 18th birthday.

But if the school ID was government-issued (i.e. by a
public school), might that not count? I just looked up
on the TSA Website, which says "acceptable IDs for
screening purposes include passports, passport cards,
DHS issued trusted traveler cards (I have all of the
aboge) and 10 other forms of ID (both US federal and
state issued, plus foreign national government issued,
plus airport and airline issued, plus Native American
tribal issued). The only otherwise qualifying government
ID that is explicitly rejected is (oddly) the firearms
permit; there are no other exclusions on the list - I
was once at a frequent-flyer conference where two of
my colleagues were stopped for noncompliant ID, even
though they were federal government cards with pictures.
One was issued by the Department of Justice, the other
I believe by the FAA. These two (despite having other
credentials, passports, driving licences, etc. etc.
and were, like me among the most tracked and scrutinized
people on the planet) refused to offer alternatives,
requiring the involvement of supervisory staff, which
annoyed everyone but made a good point. As of last year,
the feds fixed that by promulgating the Homeland Security
Personal Directive Personal Identity Verification 12,
which forces all government agencies to provide cards
that adhere to one standard.

The fact remains that there is only one government-issued
ID that is on the forbidden list, and even that is as I
recall allowed as secondary ID (to be used along with
such things as credit cards, utility bills, and, as in
one widely publicized case, a Costco member card).

Pomegranate relish
categories: appetizers, condiment, Thanksgiving
servings: 2 to 4

3 Tb finely diced shallots
1 ts lemon juice
1/4 ts kosher salt, plus more to taste
1/4 c extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 c pomegranate arils
1 Tb sliced flat-leaf parsley
freshly ground black pepper
toasted crostini and Brie cheese, for serving
h - pomegranate molasses
3 c pomegranate juice
1/4 c sugar
1 lemon, juice of

Prepare the molasses. In a saucepan, combine
pomegranate juice, sugar, and lemon juice. Bring to a
simmer and cook until a very thick syrup forms that
coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat and
let cool to room temperature.

In a small bowl, combine shallots, lemon juice, and
salt; let sit for 5 min. Whisk in 1 Tb molasses and
then olive oil. Stir in arils, parsley, and pepper to
taste. Taste for balance and seasoning.

Serve on crostini with Brie.
