Hi Nancy,

NB> it. RH>> And if the mind is beginning to fade, the chasm is wider.
NB> NB>> If it was already uncrossable, the mind beginning to fade
NB> wouldn't NB>> really make any difference... one foot or mile too far
 NB> isn't any
NB> NB>> worse really than one inch too far... ;)

RH> Can't jump the Grand Canyon in 2 leaps. (G)

NB> Nope, even if it came pretty close on the first one... :)

And it's a long way to the bottom. (G)

NB> RH>> From what Don says, it's both physical and mental. He's still
NB> RH>> mentally sharper than Mom but has his own issues to deal with.
NB> NB>> As one would be expecting, given his age... And sometimes the
NB> acuity NB>> is still there, but it just seems to be too much trouble
 NB> to use it...

RH> Hard to tell since we're not up there that often.

NB> You might have to be visiting for an extended time to be able to gauge
 NB> that sort of thing.

Yes, but going from Don's reports, his mind is going too. Not as bad as
Mom's but he's in worse shape physically. Still fighting the idea of the
nursing home tho it may be a neccessity soon.

 NB> NB>>> That sounds like a possible timeline. ;) Fine-tuning is
 NB> NB>>> ongoing... :)
NB> RH>> Especially as we've got long range plans for what we want to do.
NB> Steve RH>> asked if I wanted a walk in panty eventually--definate yes
NB> there. NB>> (That is "pantRy"? [g]) That'll definitely ease up
 NB> storage... What

 RH> That too. (G)

NB> Where are you going to put it...? What will need to be changed out to
 NB> accomplish it...?

That all has to be worked out. It would probably come as part of adding
the garage. Take out the current pantry as the door to the garage, add
the new pantry in space leading to the garage/bonus room.

NB> downstairs NB>> bathroom back in the 50s (along with other
NB> remodelings), convenient in NB>> its own right, but there are times I
NB> wish it was a pantry still... :)

RH> Win some, lose some. Nice to have a second bathroom but at the expense
RH> of a larger pantry can be hard.

NB> Exactly. Forty years living here, and I'm still not sure which I'd
 NB> really rather have... :)

And not room for both, unfortunately.

NB> My parents' last house had a really nice pantry located between the
NB> kitchen and the dining room... the doorways were at the one end, with
NB> just a counterspace with drawers along the back wall (that was the
NB> short wall, maybe 3 feet), and then the pantry went back towards the
NB> front of the house about 7, 8 feet, with counterspace and drawers
 NB> beneath along
NB> one long wall and the short wall at the other end... and glass-doored
NB> upper cabinets up to the ceiling (which was a decent height, being an
NB> older house) above them... The back wall had a window in it, and a
NB> skinny upper cabinet next to it. A two-door metal cabinet that we'd
NB> moved from the Philly house against the other long wall completed the
NB> storage. Mommy had her cookbooks tucked under the cabinets on the
NB> counter along the short wall, the toaster and toaster oven and cutting
NB> boards were on the counter under the window... :)

That sounds really nice. Rachel has a butler's pantry in between the
kitchen and dining room. It has upper and lower cabinets with counter
space, maybe about 5' by 5'total. It's on one side of the door to the
garage; the other side has a walk in good sized pantry and broom closet.

RH> My grandmother's house never had a proper
RH> pantry--she had a nice looking free standing unit that was in
RH> the kitchen tho. Some friends of ours in PA have the only one I've
RH> seen similar, but their's was built into an exsisting closet.

NB> Both nice solutions. :) It's nice to have something that looks nice,
NB> too. We've added a tall metal cabinet, and a couple of portable metal
NB> lower cabinets with countertops, bookshelves behind where the kitchen
NB> door opens for cookbooks, but it can look pretty hodgepodge... ;)

We added the gray plastic units for additional kitchen storage
(hopefully won't need now) and linen storage (will need until we build
something). Not the best looking but affordable and the room we needed.
