NB>> Quite. In retrospect, I'm just as glad I didn't really go after
NB>> an academic career... or even really make a career out of what I
NB>> did end up doing... ;)
ML> It seems (as in many fields) to be ambition more than talent.

Indeed. Never have had more than a modicum of ambition... sufficient
talent to be comfortable doing what I did... :)

ML>> He got front page of the science section of the Sunday New
ML>> York Times - that was the best vindication, but it came
ML>> decades late. The procedure he recommended 50 years ago is
ML>> now part of the standard armamentarium but itself has been
ML>> largely superseded. It may come back, though.
NB>> Fickle fate... and fickle fame... Good that he was vindicated... even
NB>> if only eventually. Of course, science is like that anyway... first
ML> It's a lot more dialectical than scientists (and others) would
ML> have you believe. But why the viciousness against the mavericks.

Mavericks make the hidebound nervous, at best... and people that feel
threatened (even if totally not actually true) often get vicious...

NB>> the idea is pooh-poohed, then accepted, then superceded... That
NB>> might have been part of why Daddy was more happy with teaching than
 NB>> with research...
ML> Again - ambition is what steers one in the direction.

I think his ambitions were less for himself, and more for his ideals.

ML>> After the next CAT scan, which happens 4/8. If the thing has
ML>> healed enough to seem intact, there is the question of whether
ML>> to remove it prophylactically or just let it sit there.
NB>> And that will be in time enough to decide whether or not the Ian trip
NB>> is feasible after all... and if prophylaxis is justifiable thereby. ;)
ML> This week I discussed both with the surgeon and the internist
ML> about the advisability of prophylaxis - the surgeon was slightly
ML> more enthusiastic, of course, but both took a wait and see
ML> stance. By the time I've waited and seen, though, it will be too
ML> late to plan for the spring, so I'm going to buy my plane ticket
ML> as soon as I have the money, and the heck with it.

Ah... true... planning needs to be happening well before the scan,
doesn't it... Maybe you can use your plans as a card in helping them
make the final decision to or not to get the thing out...

ML>> I am not sure I believe the people who claim that the best
ML>> sleeps are the ones where you don't remember your dreams.
ML>> For me, the dreams are usually the funnest part.
NB>> Most dreams, anyway... I'm not so fond of the ones that I wake up from
 NB>> in a panic... ;/ But otherwise, I agree with you... :)

ML> I used to get those occasionally, and they were serious enough
ML> that I sometimes dreaded going to sleep, but now almost always
ML> my dreams are at least neutral and most often pleasant. I still
ML> delay going to bed as long as I can, but not for any discernible
 ML> reason.

Just so much to do before "wasting" time in sleep, eh...? The panic
dreams never have kept me from going to sleep initially... just make it
hard on occasion to get Back to sleep... :)

NB>> As I understand the physiology aspects of the narcotics, if one is in
NB>> pain, then the drug works on the source of the pain, to relieve it.
ML> That just seems a little glib, as though the pain and pleasure
ML> systems were as unrelated as that resident I talked about thought
ML> that the excretory systems were.

It may depend on the level of pain... and the dosage of the drug...
I'll agree with you that pain and pleasure can be interrelated... I was
speaking more to the physiology and not to the psychology aspects,
anyway... and, yes, I know that they also are interrelated... :) But
I've been assured (and seen in practice) that when one only takes the
amount needed to reduce the pain, one runs little risk of addiction.
One gets relief, but rarely any high...

ML>> I've not done it, but if one wants to add
ML>> sweetness as well, one might toss the jicama in
ML>> a honey-based liquid. Or with something else to
 ML>> provide that dimension.
NB>> It might depend on how sweet the rest of the ingredients already
NB>> are... sometimes a tart apple is called for in that sort of thing
 NB>> anyway...
ML> Jicama by itself is kind of bland - I guess that
ML> soaking it in lemon (not uncut with a little sugar
ML> maybe) might help mimic a tart apple.

Maybe it's just supposed to provide the crispness... what sort of
nutrients does it provide...?

ML> Here's another bland vegetable put to use:
 ML> Pulisseri (yogurt curry)
 ML> 1 or 2 zuchini squash/chayote squash/green apple (grannysmith)
 ML> - cut into pieces
ML> Note: (You can use ripe mango instead of
 ML> squash/apple if you like.

The ripe mango has possibilities... ;) So what's the veggie for, to
provide the chunkiness that meat would have...?

ttyl neb

... Being sober for so many years is getting interesting.
