That brings to mind another tale, perhaps one actually with some basis
in fact.  The story goes that in the hills country of Appalacia, there
were people who were called "sin eaters".  The deal, as I recall, was
that when a person died friends and relatives came to the funeral and
put out food which somehow came to represent the sins of the newly
deceased.  The "sin eater" would consume the food and thus remove the
sins from the deceased, taking them on to herself, so that the deceased
could move on to the better place with a clean soul. But the punch line
of the story was who would eat the sins of the sin eater?

Have you ever actually played skittles?  As played in England pubs, it
is an interesting game.  Nine pins arranged in a diamond.  A small
wooden ball, the size of a duck pin ball.  The pins were placed in such
a way that the ball could go through the diamond without hitting any
pin.  You got three throws per frame, and if you got 0 on all three
throws it was called a "beaver".  For that you got a special medalion
that you had to wear until the next unlucky person won the "honour".

BTW, if you want to see what the skittle pin looks like, we have one on
the cabinet in our computer room.

      Title: Sausage Skillet
 Categories: Quick, Sausage, Main dish, Boat
      Yield: 1 servings
 
      4    Red potatoes, cut in 1/2"
           -cubes
      4    Italian-style sausages, cut
           -into 1/4" slices
      1    Onion, diced
      1    Bell pepper, cut into
           -lengths
      1    Red pepper, cut into
           -lengths
 
  In sauce pan, cover potatoes and sausage with water; simmer,
  covered, until sausage is fully cooked, about 20 minutes.  Drain
  off water; add vegetables to potatoes and sausage in fry pan.
  Simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Serve immediately.
