Ärende: other kinds nuts 443
============================
ML> It would be interesting to know, but don't jeopardize your
ML> rapport with the guy just to satisfy a curiosity.
NB> Oh, I wouldn't... It's the sort of thing that might come up in
NB> conversation, though... and I'd not actually be brazenly rude....

Don't rock the boat, see below.

NB> more in the way of one Chinese waitress we had once that finally
NB> couldn't contain herself any longer, and had to ask if we were
NB> Buddhist, since we treated the food with respect using chopsticks...
NB> Yes, it was rude, but we didn't take it so, and had many subsequent
NB> conversations with An.. :) And when she and her sister opened their own
NB> dimsum restaurant, we went there as well.. ;)

Chinese sensibilities are different from most other places',
and those brought up during the Communist era have even laxer
ideas about politeness than their ancestors did.

ML>> Not being a traditionally dairycentric cuisine, green tea
ML>> and red bean ice cream notwithstanding.
NB>> Would they have made those with other than milk, too...?
ML> No - they're a pretty new phenomenon and influenced by
 ML> western tastes.
 NB> Ah, ok. :)

For reasons unknown some of the less appropriate of western
influences have been taken up enthusiastically in Asia,
especially Japan. For example, ice cream, burgers, mayonnaise.

ML> It was still there and is now tucked safely into my
 ML> ticket wallet.
 NB> Good, that. ;)

Though thinking about it, one reflects that the chance of
my being held up on the street, though small, is marginally
greater than that of the kid going bananas and burning down
the house.

ML> Turns out that Market Basket has gotten rid of the product
ML> altogether, now carrying several varieties of Silk (traditional
ML> soy and almond; regular and light; vanilla, chocolate, and
ML> plain - in various permutations).
NB> Perhaps the house brand supplier did slip in quality, then... or
NB> Market Basket just decided not to take up shelf space with their own
NB> brand... Wegmans has done that with some things that apparently it gets
NB> more return from on the brand than it was on their own house brand...
NB> Sad, at times, since some of those were actually better in the Wegmans
 NB> brand.

And in the Market Basket situation there's also the possibility
that White Wave (the parent company of Silk) is throwing its
now considerable weight around, and it's just not worthwhile
providing a house brand any more.

==
NB>> So mostly to him, with smaller shares to you and your sister (now
 NB>> going to your b-i-l)...
 ML> That's right, though my b-i-l and I combine for over 50%,
 ML> so we retain control.
NB> Ah. Probably a very good thing... :)

To the degree that I could have contested the interpretation
of the will with a fair prospect of success, which would have
given me I believe 13% more of the estate but -100% of the
control of the disposition.

 ML> Castroville French-fried artichokes
 ML> categories: airline, California, starter
ML> After US Airways magazine 12/2014 (the last issue ever)
NB> Does that mean you actually made them...? And, is the airline gone
 NB> or just the magazine...?

I've made fried artichokes but not from this recipe.
The airline will be gone at least in name in March, but
in reality the smaller US Air is gobbling up American the
same way Continental ate up United; but it was determined
that the name recognition of the surviving brands was a
lot better.

ML> The motor vehicle administration, in addition to being
ML> useless, is also adept in not taking a stand. It has
ML> suggested that my brother's (I originally typed, in a
ML> Freudian way, bother's) situation was unassessable by
ML> the government, and it was up to his psychiatrist and/or
ML> himself to determine his fitness to drive. So he drives.
NB> Perhaps it's no worse than many others on the road... But one does
NB> wonder why the privilege was pulled in the first place, then...

You really want to know?

In his obsessive reading of every state law and regulation
available on the Internet, my brother discovered a statute
that might be interpreted as deeming him impaired to drive.
And he saw fit to call the state to clarify, and of course
the bureaucratic reasoning was, if the guy is so nuts as
to bring up the subject, he's prima facie too nuts to drive,
but even then, the government didn't actually forbid him
from driving right away - there was some precipitating factor
that tipped the balance, I'm no longer clear what, and they
suspended his licence, or so he says, until the shrink said
that he could drive again.

Monkey Bars
cat: dessert
servings: 12

1 1/4 c flour
2 md bananas -- mashed
3/4 c brown sugar, packed
1/3 c granulated sugar
1/4 c buttermilk
1 ea egg
1 Tb vegetable oil
2 ts vanilla
1/2 c walnuts -- chopped
1/4 c confectioner's sugar -- chocolate
1 ts water

Heat oven to 350 F. Lightly coat 9" square baking pan with
nonstick cooking spray.

Mix flour and baking powder in a small bowl. Beat together
banana, brown sugar and granulated sugar in bowl until
blended. Add buttermilk, egg, oil and vanilla, beating well.
Stir in flour mixture just until blended. Fold in nuts.
Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.

Bake in 350 oven for 25 to 30 min or until wooden pick
inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire
rack. Meanwhile, stir together confectioner's sugar and
water in small cup until smooth. If necessary for a
better drizzling consistency, add more water, a drop at a
time. Drizzle over cooled cake. Cut cake into 12 bars.
