ML>> Just curious. I'd have thought that to get enough
ML>> minerals to make a difference a fair amount of
ML>> volume would have to be administered (thinking of
ML>> my experience with vein irritation).
NB>> I don't remember specifics at the moment. Last infusion was back in
NB>> July... It's some standard amount in a standard pouch/small bag...
 ML> 200 or 250 no doubt.

Probably something like that... I'll try to make a proper mental note
of the details next visit... :) And/or ask... ;)

NB>> iron is in solution, darkish red-brown... first time ever, I was
NB>> struck by the resemblance to a rusty nail, and by the time I got
NB>> home had worked up a thirst for a wee dram of scotch... ;)
ML> Better perhaps than a wee dram of buie. I once looked
ML> that term up, and the standard explanation is that
ML> buie means satisfying in some kind of Gaelic.

Last Christmas (or thereabouts) I finally had a chance to sample
Drambuie... I was actually less than impressed... but then, I'm more
into the good single malts anyway... I'd brought over Glenlivet or
Macallan for my friend Edith to try, and she already had bought herself
the Drambuie, so we traded... She, being Scots-Irish, has been ringing
changes on the concept of trying "the foods of her people", and so far
had managed only to try some of the much less favorable scotches and
wasn't at all impressed... ;)

NB>> The iron itself can be a bit irritating, which is why last time they
NB>> decided to add the extra fluid bag to dilute it some as it went into
NB>> the vein, and to slow down the rate a little. They'd been pushing it
NB>> a little on the fast side...

 ML> I really don't see why they don't routinely do that -
 ML> what's 15 minutes as opposed to 30?

In this case, I think they try to push it at about 30 minutes... some
times they've gone for an hour, which is fine by me... I'm not needing
to rush off and do anything, and allow plenty of time for that
appointment, just in case I need the expected infusion... Besides, it's
usually at lunch time, and I can get a free lunch out of it, as the
volunteers bring in snacks and meals for the people getting chemo and
infusions and all... It's at the Oncology/Hematology office, but
connected to the hospital.. :)

ML>> Hard to tell about any of that. It might have been a
ML>> total joke, but it was told with an edge of bitterness
 ML>> that belied that possibility.
NB>> I suspect that it began as a joke, maybe even soon after her hire, but
NB>> she may well be feeling under-appreciated... and I can believe the
NB>> edge of bitterness, and even that now there is some talk of wanting to
NB>> get rid of her from some sectors... She's probably also always been
NB>> pretty good at what she does, some seem to be naturals at it... :)
ML> The nurses who had been unable to find my veins talked about
ML> this person with some pride and awe, and everyone was pretty
ML> crestfallen when she failed both times.

They put all their hopes on the SWAT team when they get the hard ones...
hard for them to realize it's even worse than they thought.. ;) Been
there with MJ, and to a lesser extent with Gwen... So far I've not been
quite to the impossible stage, although recently, the nurse passed it to
the expert without even trying it herself, once I mentioned that my last
two blood draws hadn't been easy-peasy... :)

ML> One recent day after 4 services, the last a Messiah parts
ML> 1 and 2, one of the veins on the right arm popped up
ML> remarkably, but it was pretty totally sclerosed. Took a
ML> day or so to come down - I'd never seen anything like it.

Responding to the extra exercise it was getting, no doubt... :)

ML> By the time it came to have the blood taken, it had
ML> completely hidden itself, good thing, as if it had shown
ML> itself enticingly the tech would have had a heck of a time
ML> getting a needle in, causing pain for me and grief for her.

Good thing it thought better about flirting... ;)

ML> She ended up using one of the threads on the back of the
ML> hand, more unpleasant than the normal forearm.

I usually get my infusions in the back of my hand... sometimes those
veins are more cooperative than the ones in the crook of the elbow... If
they can use the smaller needles, it's actually easier that way for me.
Major IVs though they usually want a bigger vein, and for the stress
echo w/the drug, they had to use one in the arm... my veins usually
look really good, and then roll away when the needle comes near, unless
trapped securely... this time, she was having trouble first finding one
that even looked good.. ;)
