Sigh. Perhaps most of the audience was so busy singing along in their
heads that they didn't notice.. (G)

ML>> led by moi, was pretty decent, the chorus fairly okay (did
 NB>> Concertmaster...?
ML> Yeh. The "leader" and the "conductor" of an orchestra are
ML> different people 99% of the time (though once in a long
ML> while I have been both).

Figured as much... and yes, I've known of concertmasters also conducting
from the chair, along with keyboard soloists, likewise... :)

NB>> Mavericks make the hidebound nervous, at best... and people that feel

Indeed.

ML>> Again - ambition is what steers one in the direction.
NB>> I think his ambitions were less for himself, and more for his ideals.
ML> I meant to imply that ambition would have steered him in
ML> another direction if he had let it.

Again, that's (at least part of) what I took from your statement. He
did let his ambitions for his ideals steer him somewhat, not that it
always came out the way he had hoped for... At one time, he did apply
for an administrative position at a Christian college, but they didn't
think he had the experience they needed and/or that he was getting too
far along in years... I think that was a bit of a blow to him...

ML>> stance. By the time I've waited and seen, though, it will be too
ML>> late to plan for the spring, so I'm going to buy my plane ticket
ML>> as soon as I have the money, and the heck with it.
NB>> Ah... true... planning needs to be happening well before the scan,
NB>> doesn't it... Maybe you can use your plans as a card in helping them
NB>> make the final decision to or not to get the thing out...
ML> My followups are too close to the proposed date of my
ML> departure for comfort - if I had the operation I'd not
ML> be in shape to enjoy the travel, even if it might be
 ML> possible to do.

Even were it done laparasopically, and you were in good health at the
time...? Maybe you should push to have the scan done sooner, then...?

NB>> It may depend on the level of pain... and the dosage of the drug...
NB>> I'll agree with you that pain and pleasure can be interrelated... I
NB>> was speaking more to the physiology and not to the psychology aspects,
NB>> anyway... and, yes, I know that they also are interrelated... :) But
NB>> I've been assured (and seen in practice) that when one only takes the
NB>> amount needed to reduce the pain, one runs little risk of addiction.
NB>> One gets relief, but rarely any high...
ML> That's fair enough, but what to one counts as substantial
ML> pain might be to someone else just a blip on the radar.

True, enough. And another factor is the addictability of the person...
But we had started out discussing why anyone on the street would think
these drugs with all their nasty side effects would be worth such
premiums... ;) Not needing them at all for pain, it might just hit the
pleasure/addictive circuits directly... and they might not notice the
nasties until they were coming down, and attribute it just to the coming
down and needing another hit...

ML> Annie's and my hostess here is dealing with a mother whose
ML> schtick is "you can't understand what I'm going through,"
ML> though her condition is just the result of an ordinary and
ML> not particularly unhealthy 86-year-old body. One cannot of
ML> course get into another's head with total reliability, but
ML> the chances seem very good that she's largely malingering.
ML> In this case I'd recommend heavy doses of mind-altering
 ML> drugs.

That's nursing home logic... ;> Understandable thinking (if not
exactly commendable action), of course, in some situations... ;) The
proper answer to such a one is something like, "Of course I can't
understand it, I'm not in your body." And then just mostly ignore the
complaining... If it isn't rote, it's coping of a sort, admittedly a
rather irritating to others sort... Occasionally one can bring that
sort of complainer up short (of the sort of no shoes/ no feet scenario
getting thru), but some people just have to top whatever it is with
their own hardships... Ignoring them works best. :)
