It reminds us of our youth and the carefree pre-1973 days when gas
was dirt cheap. I once owned a '77 Lincoln Continental Mark V, a 2
door coupe with a 460 engine. A big heavy boat with horrible gas
milage. It wasn't a convertible but did have a power moon roof. I
get sentimental over it at times and now wish I had held onto it.

There's a bit of a back story to my buying it. Alberta went through
an oil boom beginning with the 1973 Arab oil embargo, which began to
falter in 1980 from falling oil prices and then totally died by 1985
with the ill conceived National Energy Program, which ran from 1980
to 1985, whereby Alberta oil was sold domestically below world
prices to try to stimulate the stagnant eastern manufacturing
sector. By 1985 the Alberta economy was in horrible shape with a
glut of foreclosures and repossessions. I was visiting a buddy who
was a small town bank manager (not my bank) and saw a spotless
Lincoln in the parking lot. I asked if it was his and he said no, it
was a repo up for sale. Because the owner was long gone he had
decided to save money by not putting it in a secure compound.

Here's the quirky part: my friend had been involved on foreclosing
on a hobby farm that had been abandoned. When the sheriff was taking
inventory on the chattels he found the car in the barn up on blocks
and wrapped with a tarp. It had only 3000 miles on it! Following a
hunch the banker found an old write off file in the bank basement
and determined that it belonged to a relative with the same last
name as the ex-farm guy and in fact had a 5 year old writ of seizure
against it for non-payment but the bailiff hadn't been able to
locate it. Just for fun I put in a $5100 sealed bid (those cars cost
$12,000 new and the 1985 models were going for $22,000). I was
amazed to get a phone call two weeks later advising that I was top
bidder! It turns out there had been two other bids: the Ford dealer
at $5000 and the Chev dealer at $4900, but nobody else had responded
to the ads in the legal section of the local paper. And that's how I
ended up with a 7 year old car at a 14 year old price but with less
than 1 year's milage on it. I drove it for years and sold it for
$7500 which doesn't happen often as most cars depreciate, not
appreciate.

      Title: Kheer [Vermicelli Pudding]
 Categories: Desserts, Indian, Noodles, Nuts, Pudding
      Yield: 4 servings
 
    1/4 lb Butter
      2    Handfuls very fine
           -vermicelli
      4 c  Milk
      1 pt Whipping cream
      1    Handful
           Raisins
      3 tb Sugar
      4    Almonds peeled and
           -thinly sliced
 
  Melt butter in 4 qt. pot. Break vermicelli into 3 inch pieces.
  Over low heat stir  vermicelli into butter till it turns lightly
  brown. Pour in the milk and stir over medium heat till the milk
  boils. Put in the raisins, almonds and sugar. Continue to cook
  under low heat for 10 minutes. Add whipping cream and continue to
  cook for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat and when cool,
  chill in the refrigerator before serving.
