I'd guess that much of the audience had listened to three or more
versions of Messiah every year for at least a few decades... possibly
even as part of the chorus for some of those iterations (so add in
multiple rehearsals)...  Pretty hard not to know the alto (and other)
arias well enough to have them just flow along in the brain...  ;) 
Perhaps not with all the words perfectly clear, but probably close
enough... :)

Agreed.  In experience, the near outliers that resist the tendency end
up being themselves bullied by the mainstream, though... especially if
they are foolhardy enough to actually try to champion the mavericks...

And take your chances that things will stay settled down.  TBH, I'd
probably do the same... ;)

Agreed.  :)

I've known at least one instance that was similar... the action was not
taken, but it might have had true justification... ;)

No, one just thinks that one...  ;)  Or at least I've not used it out
loud either...  (And the accompanying shake of the end only physically
done when it can't be seen, like from the other end of the phone... [g])
