Steve is looking as I type.  NO way are we going to try to move it, but
he does not see any brass serial number plate there.  We did open the
front lid (had to move some owls around to do even that).  Inside, we
found three possible numbers.  There were the words "iron frame" and
underneath that the number 68475 -- both of which were obviously
permanent labels.  There was the number 90143 written on a piece of
sticky paper, but that did not look like a real serial number.  Finally
there was a letter A and underneath that the Roman number XXXVIII (38)
both of which were written into the wood back.

According to the serial number list, the first number would put it in
1885-1890, the second number would be in 1895-1900.  Who knows what the
A-38 might mean.

SO -- I'm going to declare that it is a 19th century machine, albeit in
bad need of tuning.


MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: =natchitoches Meat Pies=-
 Categories: Cajun, Meat, Pie
      Yield: 1 servings
 
MMMMM--------------------------FILLING-------------------------------
  1 1/2 lb Ground beef
      1 c  Chopped green onions, tops
           And bottoms
      1 ts Course ground black pepper
    1/2 ts Cayenne pepper
  1 1/2 lb Ground pork
      1 tb Salt
      1 ts Course ground red pepper
    1/3 c  Flour

MMMMM---------------------------CRUST--------------------------------
      2 c  Self-rising flour
      1    Egg, beaten
    1/3    Heaping cup Crisco, not
           Melted
    3/4 c  Milk
 
  Combine ground beef, ground pork, onions and seasonings in large dutch
  oven.

  Cook over medium heat, stirring often until meat loses its red color.
  Do not overcook the meat.

  Sift the flour over the meat, stirring often, until well combined with
  meat.  Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Place meat in a
  large colander to drain off excess grease and juice.
  
  For the crust:
  Sift self-rising flour and cut shortening into flour.  Add beaten egg
  and milk.  Form dough into a ball.  Roll about 1/3 of the dough at a
  time on a lightly floured board or pastry cloth.  Cut dough into 5 to
  5 1/2 inch circles.  I use the top of an old coffee pot which is
  exactly the right size.

  I find it easier to cut out all of the circles for pies and place
  them on a cookie sheet, separated by wax paper.
  
  To assemble:  Place a heaping tablespoon of filling on one side of the
  pastry round. Dampen edge of pie containing meat with fingertips,
  fold top over meat and crimp with fork dipped in water.  Prick with
  fork twice on top.
  
  To fry:  Fry in deep fat fryer at 350 degrees until golden brown.

  These meat pies will freeze beautifully if enclosed in plastic
  sandwich bags. When frying frozen meat pies, do not thaw before
  frying.

  Cocktail meat pies can be made the same way, using a biscuit cutter
  and 1 teaspoon of meat filling.

  Serves 26 to 28, 5 to 5 1/2 inch pies.
