 DS> During the summer of 62 we lived in Buffalo NY.  There were frequent
 DS> gas wars there at that time.  The price would inch down day by day and

I don't remember prices going below 19.9, maybe 17.9, in
Silver Spring in the 1950s. 13 had to have been a loss
leader.

   I drove from
 DS> town to out near an airport and the town always did the jump up before
 DS> the outer area -- so I was able to fill up at the best times by just
 DS> watching that.

I wonder whether the owners of the gas stations couldn't
have done an informal price fix. Formal would be getting
together to do the dirty deed, at least by telephone.
Informal would involve having someone drive by the other
gas stations and reporting back.

 DS> That little old lady might have been my Aunt Noreen.  She was about
 DS> 4'6" or maybe even shorter.  She never owned anything but Cadillac.  

I knew (occasionally went out with) a girl who claimed 4'11"
but was probably a couple inches shorter than that. Her
publicity shot has her standing in an enormous coat on the
steps of a government building, Supreme Court, I think, with
the camera shooting up at her so as to make her look more
imposing. She used to drive a Caddy I think, propped up with
two telephone books. I don't know what she uses now, as
phone books are hard to come by.

Life is not just a bowl of eggplant.

   In fact almost
 DS> everything was some sort of soup or some type of vegetable casserole
 DS> with canned cream of ...  soup.  So I settled for something wierd.

      Title: Aromatic Aubergines
 Categories: Vegetables
      Yield: 2 servings

      2    Good-sized aubergines
   -- quartered and sliced
           Olive oil for frying
     75 g  GruyŠre; sliced very thinly

-------------------------------TOMATO SAUCE:-------------------------------
      1 lg Onion; sliced very thinly
      2 tb Olive oil
    400 g  Canned tomatoes
           - drained & finely chopped
      1    Bay leaf
      1 ts Dried thyme
    1/2 ts Orange peel, grated
      1    Pinch of saffron
      1    Garlic clove; crushed
           Salt

  Serves 2-3

  In this delectable dish, sauteed slices of aubergine are covered with an
  aromatic tomato sauce and baked with a topping of cheese. It makes a
  wonderful meal served with a tossed salad and some fresh granary rolls.

  Soften the onion in the oil for about 10 min, covered, until
  translucent but not browned. Stir in the tomatoes and add the herbs,
  orange peel, saffron, garlic and salt. Simmer gently for 30 min,
  then liquidize and leave to stand over a very low heat while you prepare
  the aubergines.Sauté the aubergine slices in olive oil until browned on
  both sides. Drain and dry on kitchen paper.Arrange the aubergine slices
  in layers, covering each layer with the tomato sauce and topping with
  the cheese slices. Cover with foil and bake at 190 degrees C / 375
  degrees F / gas 5 for 20 min.
