NB>>> Oh probably not... but I suppose one could just mix it well before
NB>>> serving, and even it out mostly... ;)
ML>> Then one would just be able to watch it bleed.
 NB>> Oooooh... psychedelic... (G)
ML> From what I recall of psychedelia, the colors come in very
ML> distinct, almost chiseled-looking, bands. The rather milder
ML> pinks and whites of a red cabbage salad would be more oozy
 ML> and messy.

Psychedelia for the 21st century... ;)

ML>> Annie complained that I wasn't chipper and perky (actually
ML>> was kind of grumpy) and didn't eat like I was supposed to.
NB>> She's not used to you not being closer to 100%, I suppose...
ML> I'm not, either, though in recent years I've spent a
ML> lot more daytime time snoozing or staring at the ceiling.

Old grey mare aint what used to be... and all that... But still a
surprise when we can't do what we thought we could...

ML>> I'm back in Williamsport now and expected to eat like a
ML>> man - still not feeling up to it, though.
NB>> Sad time of year to not feel up to eating... probably have to retrain
NB>> your digestive system after its recent ordeal...
ML> Did you see the recent "news" article that claimed, based
ML> on dubious estimating, that your average American consumes
ML> 7000 Calories on Christmas? That I don't buy, but half that
 ML> would be a conservative estimate. I think I ate 2000 tops.

Definitely off your feed. Dunno about the average American, but I could
well imagine some consuming that 7000 calories pretty easily, with all
the candy and sweets available, and the focus probably more on fatty
foods than lean for Christmas. And the propensity to overeat at the
Christmas feast, just like at Thanksgiving... and probably more alcohol
than at Thanksgiving as well, in many cases...

ML>> Probably going to see her this week - she's in Williamsport
 ML>> too.
NB>> She might have some ideas of what might be useful tonics (in the old
 NB>> sense)....
ML> She brought her husband and a Key lime pie. Her greatest
ML> utility was reminding Annie that I am in fact lucky to be
 ML> even at half power.

That's useful, too, though... ;)

ML> After Annie pricked Anne's balloon by calling our Christmas
ML> dinner Episcopalian and WASPy (which it was), she turned
ML> right around and made pot roast and yeast rolls for dinner,
ML> under the impression that Dan, the doc's husband, ate only
ML> white bread food. Turns out he'll eat anything, but the pot
ML> roast was good, despite the unorthodox way of preparation -
ML> browned a chuck roast, threw it in the crockpot with raw
ML> onions uncut, raw celery, and raw carrots. Put it on to simmer
ML> for 6 hours or so. Oh, yes, half a bottle of red wine, which
ML> I had to remind her to boil up first, as crockpot heat would
ML> not be sufficient to cook off the alcohol. Bay and thyme. The
ML> only problem was large onions uncut and cooked on top of a
ML> stew end up rotting up there instead of blending in, so there
ML> was a temporary smell of sulfurous onion. Luckily, that
ML> dissipated readily, and the food tasted pretty good.

So one should put the onions lower in the pot, perhaps beneath the
meat...? At least the sulfurousness was only temporary, and didn't
affect the end results... :)

ML> I had a quarter pound of chuck fat, a roll, and a couple
 ML> carrots.

That's pretty meager for you, to be sure. :)

NB>> Speaking of spicy, has your ability to eat spicy things been affected
NB>> by the recent events, too...?
ML> Not until an hour later. Food has begun to go through me
ML> like a shot (I've always had that tendency), and so lots
ML> of undigested capsaicin ends up down where it can cause
ML> the most discomfort. I've taken to eating smaller doses
ML> of hots. Speaking of which, Annie has gotten me a packet
ML> of dried ghost chiles, which I haven't had the courage
 ML> to confront yet.

I can see where your current state of health is a bit bewildering to
Annie... here she thought she had it all figured out (with of course
still being somewhat off-course before anyway, but not too too far off,
generally) and now things that you used to enjoy are scary even to
you... Of course ghosts are a bit scary anyway... ;)
