All you can do is shrug and say, whatever.

I was far more interested by the real hitman whom I met after
a concert maybe a quarter century ago. His job (I never knew
his full name, but I was introduced by one of my friends who
had all sorts of connections, so it's just as well) was to
fit extra-undesirable undesirables with swimming aids of the
cement variety, but in his off hours he went to concerts.

As Joan Nathan mused, what did they do before they had potatoes.

One could make latkes out of plantains, I guess.

Annie wanted me to make 4 potatoes' worth; I wanted to do one;
we compromised on 2, which produced 10 sizable pancakes, of
which she ate 2, and I ate 1, leaving a bunch to make up for
the lack of extra spring rolls from the other day.

Gretchenes Latkes (Buckwheat Onion Latkes)
categories: Jewish, Hanukkah, not quite
yield: 8 to 12, depending on the size you want

1 c buckwheat flour
1 ts salt
1 ts baking powder
2 lg eggs
2 c grated onions (about 2 md)
Vegetable oil for frying
Sour cream or applesauce, for garnish

Stir the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a
small bowl. Beat in the eggs, mixing well. Then stir
in the onions.

Heat a nonstick frying pan and add a film of oil.
Ladle 2 Tb of the flour-onion mixture into the frying
pan and heat, frying until golden, then flip and cook
the second side. Eat alone or with sour cream or
applesauce.
