=============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> ;) RH>> I do that kind of thing with quilting now, not puzzles.
 NB> NB>> True, that's similar. ;)

 RH> But more fun, IMO.

NB> More creative, especially since there isn't any specific correct
NB> solution to be accomplished... :)

To an extent there is, but there's also a lot more leeway to the
solution. I could, for example, sub a pink for a purple in some areas or
use a complimentary color instead of an analogous one to get the color
look I want.

NB> RH>> NIce to have traditions like that. We've been in so many
NB> different RH>> places for Christmas, we've not established any
NB> specific traditions. RH>> This was our first one in WF since our
NB> first year there, and we left RH>> for Israel two days later.
NB> NB>> At the moment, it would appear that your "tradition" is to be
NB> NB>> traveling someplace... ;) It's only when one is settled, and
NB> without NB>> other calls on one's plans, that one can establish
NB> traditions... :) NB>> When Christmas Day itself stopped being my
 NB> family's day for
NB> NB>> celebration, we were free to do something else instead... :)

RH> I think it's just that we were in so many different places over the
RH> years, we never got settled on too many specific traditions. We
RH> adopted some of the German customs (Saint Nicholas day, advent
RH> wreath,....) while over there but discontinued when we returned, in
RH> favor of others that lasted a bit, then went by the way.

NB> The nice thing about traditions is that one can fall back on them, but
NB> also that if the situation changes, the traditions can change along
NB> with the changing times... :)

As they have, over the course of raising our girls and their leaving
home to establish their own traditions.

RH> One thing we've always done as members of a church that has one, is
RH> participated in the Christmas eve service. Seemed a bit odd in HI,
RH> to come out of it and not see snow, as we had in AZ and other places.
RH> Our current church doesn't do a Christmas eve service because most of
RH> the members are students, and home for that time frame.

NB> During the time that we were going to Syracuse for Christmas Eve for
NB> Backus Christmas, we missed being able to go to our service here...
NB> and since we needed to get right back home for Christmas day for Elder
NB> Christmas, we couldn't go to their 11pm service in Syracuse, either.
NB> Once my family's Christmas moved off of Christmas Day, we'd stay over
NB> to spend a little time with Mom on Christmas Day, and did go to a
 NB> service
NB> in Syracuse then... and then back over to Margit's for a Christmas
NB> Day dinner on Christmas day... Now that we don't go to Syracuse any
 NB> more,
NB> we can go to our own service... :)

And out to the Seoul House afterward. (G) How long have they been going?

RH> For a while, I made home made english muffins for breakfast but that
RH> fell by the way after a while. Something will start eventually. Don
RH> did stockings this year for him, Mom & Dad, Marta, her significant
RH> other & their son and Dad's care giver & housekeeper. He put in the
RH> traditional box of raisins, orange & chocolate bar. I did do that
RH> fairly regularly with Rachel and Deborah when they were young.

NB> I took over doing stockings for my family somewhere soon after I was
NB> in college... it started out that I was just doing the stuffing part
 NB> with
NB> the things that Daddy had collected for them, while they did the other
NB> things Christmas eve to get ready for the next day... We did
NB> stockings for the whole family even after the other siblings had
 NB> started their
NB> families... especially as long as it was happening on Christmas Day...
NB> My sister Lydia helped with them for a few years, too... At one
NB> point, I was bringing the fruits, nuts, candy, etc with us to
 NB> Syracuse, and
NB> filling stockings while we were there... that was when I started
NB> sneaking a stocking behind the tree for Mom and Stu... ;) The first
NB> year, they were SO surprised... :) That's another tradition that has
NB> gone by the wayside, now that my kid's been off on his own forever, my

So, in the last few years, traditions have changed for you also.

NB> siblings do stockings for their own families now, and the celebration
NB> itself has become more just an occasion to get together and visit over
NB> an informal table of goodies... ;)

That can be just as much fun, and much less stressful.

Catch you later,
