RH>>> I do that kind of thing with quilting now, not puzzles.
 NB>>> True, that's similar. ;)
 RH>> But more fun, IMO.
NB>> More creative, especially since there isn't any specific correct
NB>> solution to be accomplished... :)

RH> To an extent there is, but there's also a lot more leeway to the
RH> solution. I could, for example, sub a pink for a purple in some areas
RH> or use a complimentary color instead of an analogous one to get the
 RH> color look I want.

The wide range of color choice was mostly what I was thinking of... :)
And if you were to make a Victorian crazy quilt, there wouldn't even be
the pattern constraints... :)

RH>> I think it's just that we were in so many different places over the
RH>> years, we never got settled on too many specific traditions. We
RH>> adopted some of the German customs (Saint Nicholas day, advent
RH>> wreath,....) while over there but discontinued when we returned, in
RH>> favor of others that lasted a bit, then went by the way.
NB>> The nice thing about traditions is that one can fall back on them, but
NB>> also that if the situation changes, the traditions can change along
NB>> with the changing times... :)

RH> As they have, over the course of raising our girls and their leaving
RH> home to establish their own traditions.

Which is to be expected... :)

RH>> One thing we've always done as members of a church that has one, is
RH>> participated in the Christmas eve service. Seemed a bit odd in HI,
RH>> to come out of it and not see snow, as we had in AZ and other places.
RH>> Our current church doesn't do a Christmas eve service because most of
RH>> the members are students, and home for that time frame.
NB>> During the time that we were going to Syracuse for Christmas Eve for
NB>> Backus Christmas, we missed being able to go to our service here...
NB>> and since we needed to get right back home for Christmas day for Elder
NB>> Christmas, we couldn't go to their 11pm service in Syracuse, either.
NB>> Once my family's Christmas moved off of Christmas Day, we'd stay over
NB>> to spend a little time with Mom on Christmas Day, and did go to a
NB>> service in Syracuse then... and then back over to Margit's for a
NB>> Christmas Day dinner on Christmas day... Now that we don't go to
NB>> Syracuse any more, we can go to our own service... :)

RH> And out to the Seoul House afterward. (G) How long have they been
 RH> going?

A long time... decades... I'm thinking 25 years at least.... they were
well established a while before we started making them a tradition...
we'd been there at least once or twice before...

NB>> I took over doing stockings for my family somewhere soon after I was
NB>> in college... it started out that I was just doing the stuffing part
NB>> with the things that Daddy had collected for them, while they did
NB>> the other things Christmas eve to get ready for the next day... We
NB>> did stockings for the whole family even after the other siblings had
NB>> started their families... especially as long as it was happening on
NB>> Christmas Day... My sister Lydia helped with them for a few years,
NB>> too... At one point, I was bringing the fruits, nuts, candy, etc with
NB>> us to Syracuse, and filling stockings while we were there... that was
NB>> when I started sneaking a stocking behind the tree for Mom and
NB>> Stu... ;) The first year, they were SO surprised... :) That's
NB>> another tradition that has gone by the wayside, now that my kid's
NB>> been off on his own forever, my siblings do stockings for their own

RH> So, in the last few years, traditions have changed for you also.

It's the nature of traditions to evolve... they wax, they wane... some
parts of them might stay constant, like what goes into the stockings IF
one has them... (G)

NB>> families now, and the celebration itself has become more just an
NB>> occasion to get together and visit over an informal table of
 NB>> goodies... ;)

RH> That can be just as much fun, and much less stressful.

Different sort of stressful, anyway... ;) Another tradition that has
evolved is my doing the Christmas punch every year (to make sure that
there wasn't any apple lurking in the red fruit juices)... Now that's
been taken over by others, but they still make sure that it doesn't have
any apple in it... some of them have been forced into (horrors!)
actually reading labels... :)
