Sad but true. I suppose exercise might be beneficial.

Well, though New York got only (only) 6-12", an hour away
there was twice that, and Boston and central Mass. had up
to 3 feet.

I don't understand why the NOAA guy was forced to apologize
for the unrealistic expectations of the public.

If mind over matter applied here, one should just be able
to master the ailment without any costly quack medicine
in the first place.* I will give the stuff one more try,
in the interest of fairness, even though I know that it
won't do any good. Lilli wants me to go to Fukuoka with
her, which I was disinclined to do, especially as there
are other friends whom she can pal around with, and it
would be stretching my budget to the breaking point
(Japan is a huge budget stretch always), but what the
hey, maybe I'll do it.

* Recent studies have showed that the more expensive a
medicine is, the more likely it is going to be perceived
as effective - even when it is a placebo. Similarly with
wine - take your Two Buck Chuck and put a $20 label on it
and people will think it's a lot better than it is.

That's funny and sad. Apparently he's become a TripAdvisor whore.
This is such a contrast from the olden days, when a restaurateur
would try to build a relationship with patrons - back then, those
just passing through would get short shrift, not an ideal
situation either.

In retrospect, you probably should have said, just moved here;
then there would have been some incentive for the guy to treat
you with the kid gloves that he apparently reserves for outlanders.

Primehouse arugula-fennel salad
cat: pretentious, rich, starter
servings: 4

2 shallots, minced
3 Tb toasted fennel seed, ground
1 qt heavy cream
12 oz goat cheese
6 Roma tomatoes, cut in half lengthwise
Hickory chips, soaked in water for 1/2 hr
white truffle oil to taste
1/4 c balsamic vinegar
1/4 c extra virgin olive oil
1/2 c vegetable oil
2 Tb chives, chopped fine
1 lb arugula, wild or baby
salt and pepper to taste

Wild arugula and shaved fennel salad with goat cheese fondue
and truffle-smoked tomatoes

Sweat shallots and fennel in a sm amount of oil. Add cream
and bring to a boil; reduce to a simmer. Reduce by 1/3. Put
the mixture into a blender and add the goat cheese to
thicken. Season. Set aside and keep warm.

Light charcoal in a smoker and add the soaked hickory chips.
Arrange tomatoes on a sheet pan, cut side down, place in the
prepared smoker and smoke for 20-30 min. Remove and slowly
roast in a 250F oven for 1 hr or until skin has separated
from the meat of the tomato. Remove from oven and remove
skin. Cut in half lengthwise. Drizzle with truffle oil
and set aside.

In a bowl combine vinegar and oils, emulsifying completely.
Add chives and adjust seasoning. Toss with arugula and
fennel. Season with salt and pepper.

Drizzle goat cheese mixture onto a plate. Place 3 tomato
wedges in center of the plate. Top with arugula and fennel.
