RH>> those in the class. A good half or more of the 63 were within a 25 mile
RH>> radius of Margaretville. Some of them had not been out of the state
RH>> until our senior trip to DC.
NB>> I've seen that lots of places we've been... Richard has only lived in
NB>> NYS, although in various parts thereof... :)

RH> Did he ever live in the Catskills?

No... he was born in Elmira, and the family moved to North Syracuse when
he was young. He spent a lot of summer days up in the Adirondacks,
either at boy scout camp (Massaweepie [(sp?) only mostly heard it said,
not seen it written]) or at the Pond...

RH>> You lived in several different states before you even graduated from
RH>> high school; I went to the same school, same building even, for all
 RH>> 13 years.
NB>> Quite true.. :) You've seen more of the world, and lived in
NB>> different states over the country, in your adult life... but I had
NB>> the experience of living in totally different parts of the country
NB>> growing up.. East, West, Central, South and North... :)

RH> Did your parents ever acquire a taste for local foods and add them to
RH> their home cooking or did you wait until you got out on your own to
 RH> try new foods?

There was always some trying out of local foods... after all, that's how
we discovered that we ALL (even Daddy) hated hominy, no matter how Mommy
tried to fix it... ;)

NB>> Never settled in my accent, or my culture, just assimilated as I went
NB>> along... made it easy to assimilate from friends and acquaintances
NB>> later on, and from whatever I was exposed to... ;)

RH> We assimilated parts--some words have entered our vocabulary that we
RH> picked up in various assignments. Also, as you know, various local
RH> foods are now part of our regular eating. I don't think Steve picked up
RH> any sort of accent but I have more of a southern one. I didn't realise
RH> how much of one I had until we were in HI and I was questioned about
 RH> it. (G)

THe whole four years we lived in Mississippi, we were teased about our
Yankee accents... we moved up to Philly, and were immediately teased
about our southern accents... ;) One just can't win... (G)

NB>> Or to have someone to share the exciting discoveries with... That
NB>> was indeed part of the joy of doing the genealogy trips with Mom...
NB>> we could put our heads together to solve the genie puzzles, too...

RH> That must have been fun as you were working on the same family for the
RH> most part. I presume you did some research on your birth family while
RH> on some of the trips with your MIL, but mostly they were Backus family
 RH> research?

Mostly she was along on my trips, helping me find my family info. She'd
done most of her family already by the time we were doing our trips
together, and the Backus genealogy had been done by a distant cousin who
got info from as many Backus descendants as he could, including
Richard's Grampa... :) Mom did do some on Grams' family, but again, I
think that was mostly done by the time we went on our trips. There was
some searching for cemetaries for her people when we were up at the
Pond, as one branch of hers was up in St. Lawrence County... If there
happened to be some research she could do on her family when we were in
an area for mine, of course we'd work on that together, too... :) The
first trip we did together, she decided that she wanted to teach me how
to do on-site research, so off we went to central PA, to courthouses,
cemetaries, libraries, churches and all... and she did a one-on-one
workshop, basically... ;)

NB>> As there's compatibility, I'll agree with the more enjoyable to eat
NB>> with someone... but it's also nice to eat what one wants... ;)
NB>> Fortunately Richard and I tend to be compatible that way, too... He
NB>> just isn't into the trip thing so much, though... :)

RH> We can usually find some place we can agree on for meals, and
RH> sometimes even figure we want to split a certain meal. Other times we
RH> agree on where to go, but both want a different meal.(G)

Sounds pretty normal... :)

NB>>> No matter where you are, people have to eat something... ;)
RH>> Like breathing, a basic, necessary part of living.
 NB>> Indeed.

RH> Quit doing either one and your days are limited.

Pretty much so. ;)
