NB>> Off the top of my head, I can't think of many really spicy American
NB>> foods except wings and chili... and some appetizers like jalapeno
NB>> bites... and hot sauce for the "garbage" plates...
ML> People like to say that the quality of the ingredients
ML> speaks for itself, but that posits that spice necessarily
ML> is used to cover up shortcomings, which I believe to be
 ML> a slanderous assumption.

I'm with you on that... True, spice MIGHT be used to cover up
shortcomings but it's also quite nice to enhance the taste of foods, as
well... ;) Perhaps that's a piece of my preferring Asian (of just about
any sort) over American cuisine... ;)

Are there any other particularly American foods that are spicy...?

ML>> I'm looking forward to Arizona but not for the spiciness
 ML>> of the food.
NB>> That's your baseball with Swisher trip, yes...?
ML> Yeah. Nearly two months hence; I'm counting the ours and
ML> the minutes, too. There will be one meal at the Royal Thai
ML> place, and that will be spicy toward the limit of my
ML> tolerance; other than that, meat and potatoes hold the
ML> potatoes. Swisher will want breakfast - I've booked mostly
ML> Hamptons, which offer eggs, breakfast meat, and starch for
ML> free. I'll take a sausage or two and maybe a donut and juice.

Royal Thai does sound nice. :) I hear you on the breakfast, I tend to
try to find something decent on those buffets just because it's there
and "free"... even though I'm not much of a breakfast person normally
either... ;)

ML>> Many people don't react much to salt; for others it's
ML>> catastrophic. Me, it just causes or exacerbates edema.
NB>> My sodium/potassium balance can play into fluid retention, but that's
NB>> all I've noticed... I'm more sensitive to the taste of excessive
 NB>> salt.... :)
ML> I had to take three Lasixes today after having spaghetti
ML> and chili (made with that ancient roast beef that I banged
ML> into the freezer a month ago) at 3 am this morning. Big
ML> mistake, but I was hungry.

Was that particularly salty...? Can't blame you though... hunger makes
for some odd/interesting choices... ;)

ML>> Well, mostly. There was KFC, Burger King, McDonalds, ...,
ML>> though Lilli stood by with equanimity as I ate some things
ML>> that might put off other friends.
NB>> This friend might have joined you... (G)
ML> Relatively few of my friends these days have adventurous
ML> palates - either that or they have used them up and have
ML> become timid in their old age. It would be nice to take a
ML> field trip with someone whose tastes were as wide-ranging
 ML> as mine.

I hear you. :) If anything, I think my palate is becoming more
adventurous in my old age... ;) Some things are ok once, and that
satisfies the urge to try, but other things become new favorites... :)
If I had the funds, I'd volunteer...

NB>> ... Spinach is the broom of the stomach. - French proverb
ML> I was unaware of that, but an Internet investigation
ML> yields a wide variety of quotations, most amusing being
ML> from Joseph Roques, New Treatise on Everyday Plants,
ML> Especially with Regard to Medicine (1838) - "Spinach,
ML> broom of the stomach, a banal saying that has been
ML> the cause of more than one indigestion ... ."

Stole that tag from someone... probably UDD... ;) I happen to like
spinach well enough... doesn't seem to work as a broom, though, nor give
me indigestion... :)

ML>> When I was in the neuro unit some years ago, my first
ML>> roommate was a screamer, and I'd have strongly preferred
ML>> a private room. Cancer, you can see why - I'd bet HIPAA
ML>> regulations, strictly read, would mandate such for all
 ML>> serious illnesses.
NB>> They certainly isolate those that could infect others. But it
NB>> makes a lot of sense to also isolate those that are at greater
 NB>> risk from others... :)
ML> Mutual isolation can be a good thing. Back in the once upon
ML> a times, they used to put the immunocompromised into "life
ML> islands" - roomettes with air filtered in and out and with
ML> airlocks for transferring stuff -; later, such were used in
ML> cases of suspected contagiousness, notably, AIDS before the
ML> method of transmission was figured out.

They still have some of those in the EDs around here. I'm not sure if
they quite meet the airlock/air filtered standards, but they are a lot
more contained than the usual cubby-with-a-curtain, or the bed in the
hallway... I was just in one of those, on hospital duty with one of my
friends here...
