Ärende: fast food 176
=====================
Hi Michael,

ML> I'd tend to agree, but on the efficient delivery of
ML> nutrients issue the fast food places do as well as
ML> anyone, and that's a valid criterion in many parts
 ML> of the world.
RH> Yes, that is one redeeming thing about them.

ML> I was thinking of the urban areas in the United States,
ML> where one can get adequate nutrition for cheaper and
ML> faster at the Clown or the Monarch than often one can
 ML> at home.

Faster, yes, cheaper, I'm not so sure about. Depends on how much of a
cook you are and how well you know what decent nutrition is. I'd say you
could get adequate--not great, but enough to keep you
functioning--nutrition but I'd not want to make it my main source.

ML> Tho, in some parts of the
RH> world you can eat much better, cheaper than American import food, with
RH> occaisional nods to local tastes.

ML> As we've discussed, American fast food somehow has achieved
ML> higher than normal status in some of the far-off countries,
ML> to my surprise, shock, dismay, whatever. But where that niche
ML> is not served by McDonald's, there are indigenous sources of
ML> quick cheap nourishment. They're often street vendors, but
ML> there are local chains as well (Jollibee's in the Philippines,
ML> but the brand has expanded into other countries including the
ML> US). There are also lots of cafeteria-type restaurants, and in
ML> most countries the phobia about holding food at improper
 ML> temperatures isn't so prevalent.

Even in the US I've seen enough hole in the wall places where you could
get a good meal at a good price. We liked the Korean places that were
all over HI. Germany had the wurst stands all over, and Berlin had quite
the range of doner stands, so yes, I've experienced non American chain
foods that provided decent nutrition. I wouldn't want to eat at a wurst
stand for every meal; other than pomme frites, they seriously lack
veggies. OTOH, the various Korean places you could get a good choice of
meats and veggies at a good price. I think most western countries do
hold to a higher standard of food safety than Asian ones; there's
probably some regulation in the latter but not as strict. Still, I think
I'd rather avoid the McD's if I could. (G)

ML> Maybe, though I suspect the absolute quantity of carb
ML> is just as important if not more so.
RH> Yes, you need some carbs but best is a good balance of both protein
RH> and carb. I was low on protein intake today so just had some cheese to
RH> add to the total. Otherwise my morning number would reflect the
 RH> imbalance.

ML> Part of my problem is that I was on a no-carb regimen for quite
ML> a while and then for economic and convenience reasons went to
ML> high-carb, with the result that my system got terminally confused.

We've gone with minimal meat at times, making up the protein by
combining grains, beans and dairy. I'd do a week or so of no meat meals
but they were higher carb than if I'd served meat. It was a matter of
economics for us; we've never had a time when we could go carb free. I
have learned to watch my carb intake, balancing it with enough protein
to keep my system (fairly) level overall. Trying to avoid messing it up
so the diabetes stays under control naturally.

 ML> Skirlie (oatmeal and onions)
RH> I think I'd have this as a carb side to meat and sub in some low carb
 RH> veggies for the potatoes.

ML> And oatmeal is supposed to be relatively good for you, though
ML> on whose authority other than the Quacker (typed that way but
 ML> deliberately left) I don't know.

The grains folks as a whole I guess are behind it. Same ones that push
rice, quinoa, aramanth, etc as "better" choices. Better than white rice,
flour, etc, I'll agree, but whole grains are, as a whole, (G) better for
you.
