Ärende: fast food 213
=====================
Hi Michael,

ML> I was thinking of the urban areas in the United States,
ML> where one can get adequate nutrition for cheaper and
ML> faster at the Clown or the Monarch than often one can
 ML> at home.
RH> Faster, yes, cheaper, I'm not so sure about. Depends on how much of a
RH> cook you are and how well you know what decent nutrition is.

ML> Go shopping in New York City sometime. It really is
ML> cheaper to get McFood or other fast stuff, although
ML> I hear that the 50c/slice pizza place has finally
 ML> gone belly-up.

I'd rather avoid NYC if I can.

 ML> I'd say
RH> you could get adequate--not great, but enough to keep you
RH> functioning--nutrition but I'd not want to make it my main source.

ML> Neither would I, for taste reasons rather than nutrition -
ML> your average fast food may be more fatty and starchy than
ML> ideal, but at most of these places you can eat healthily
ML> enough. It's the fries and soft drinks that are the killer.

Also the white bread buns. We rarely get fries, subbing out a side salad
for them on combos, even if we have to pay an upcharge.

RH> Even in the US I've seen enough hole in the wall places where you
RH> could get a good meal at a good price.

ML> Indeed, but what's the saying, you can get fast, good, or
ML> cheap, pick two of the three.

Actually, the Korean places were pretty fast, had some decent choices
for sides and were fairly fast, depending on what was ordered. Something
like chicken katsu took longer than bulgogi because it was cooked up
fresh but even then, we usually didn't have to wait long. OTOH, a chain
place is usually fast (unless it's lunch or supper time), semi cheap and
not always good.

ML> We liked the Korean places that
RH> were all over HI. Germany had the wurst stands all over, and Berlin had
RH> quite the range of doner stands, so yes, I've experienced non American
RH> chain foods that provided decent nutrition. I wouldn't want to eat at a
RH> wurst stand for every meal; other than pomme frites, they seriously
 RH> lack veggies.

ML> I wouldn't want to eat at a wurst stand at all - a simple
ML> sausage on a stick will run you over $2 these days and
ML> not be anywhere so good as what a reputable pub will sell
ML> for maybe $3 (of course there is the question of how much
ML> I'd spend on Bier at a pub).

Our choice is to leave the beer in the keg. The wurst stands we went to
never served it on a stick, closest was the curry ketchup wurst, served
cut up with a little fork. Otherwise it was all finger food, no sticks
needed. IIRC, we could get a meal of a wurst, fries and drink for under
DM 6, but this was mid to late 80s, early 90s we were there.

ML> And oatmeal is supposed to be relatively good for you, though
ML> on whose authority other than the Quacker (typed that way but
 ML> deliberately left) I don't know.
RH> The grains folks as a whole I guess are behind it.

 ML> A conspiracy by the culinary-industrial complex!

As usual, I guess.

Catch you later,
Ruth
