I try. My secret has always been an extremely tough
physical plant that doesn't obey numbers very well. I
take after my father that way - he had a heart attack
in his 50s that wasn't detected until his 70s (I had
mine in my 50s, but it wasn't diagnosed for two or
three years after that).

The more eminent of your classmates probably realize
that there are other kinds of excellence than appear in
the news. Not a big deal. The one year in school part
might be a problem: I went to one graduate school for
one year and don't maintain contact with any of my
classmates. I am only a little better with high school
and college but do maintain, irregularly, some ties.

I am down to a couple hundred thousand miles and intend
to spend them down as a sort of hedge - if United
survives, I will start earning again (though at this
diminished new rate).

Well, for a while I was one of the 50 percenters, but
I kept quiet about it and did fine (got up to maybe
3/4 of a million miles - that was when I was doing more
giving away tickets and upgrades to friends while barely
dipping into principal, as it were). Then came the
frequent-flyer Websites such as Flyertalk and Milepoint,
which "outed" all the secrets, and the airlines started
pulling the plug. I think I can still grab a 15-20% total
discount rather than the 5-10 that the new system offers,
but that means that my largess with miles is likely to
be a thing of the past.

Beef goulash
categories: stew, Hungarian, Singaporean, main
servings: 5 or 6

1.2 kg stewing beef chuck, cubed 1"
1 lg yellow onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, cubed 1 cm
1 cn diced plum tomatoes
1 Tb tomato paste
2 ts caraway seeds (powdered, optional)
4 Tb paprika
5 c beef stock
8 Tb bacon-fat infused oil
Salt

Brown beef, salting liberally, in bacon-fat infused oil.
Be careful not to overcrowd the browning pan. Set aside
in stewing pot.

Fry onions in bacon-fat and beef drippings infused oil,
2 min on medium-high heat. Add garlic, and fry 1 min.
Add green peppers, and fry 1 min. Add caraway seeds,
and fry for 1 min to a toasty finish.

Add tomato paste, stirring well. Add diced tomatoes,
letting it bubble for 2 min. Stir in paprika.

Add beef stock, and bring to a boil. Transfer to the
pot with the beef. Bring to a boil and then simmer for
at least 5 hr. If prepping in advance, bring to a boil
then take off heat, and pop it into the fridge to steep
overnight. Heat up and simmer 5 to 6 hr the next day.
