Hi Dave,

DD> Just as you would in the fall of the year when people rake and burn
 DD> leaves, tc.

RH> That, and spring wild fires, camp fires, wood stoves and so on. That's
RH> why our fireplace is a gas one, but one that puts out heat instead of
RH> letting it all go up the chimney. (Steve changed out the vented system
 RH> for a ventless one.)

DD> I am SO glad that I am not afflicted in that direction. I enjoy the
DD> smell of (most) wood fires and a whiff of burning leaves. Heck, when I

I like the smell, but I don't like what the smoke does to my lungs. Same
as I like the smell of coffee but just can't get it past my mouth. Or,
fresh curing tobacco smells good but when it's processed into a
cigarette, I can't get anywhere near it.

DD> was a youngster and the coal-fired steam trains were common I even
DD> enjoyed the coal smoke. More so than the housewives who used the line
DD> and clothes pin method of solar drying for their laundry.

I saw, thanks to my dad, a lot of steam engines when I was growing up.
Never was fond of them, especially when he'd take us to a place where
there was nothing but the engines and related paraphanalia, with much
more interesting stuff elsewhere. As for line drying clothes, Mom got
her first dryer when I was in 8th grade so I've both hung plenty and
smelled plenty of line dryed stuff. The fresh air smell wasn't bad but
Mom used no fabric softener so everything was stiff and scratchy.

RH> possible. Don't think I've ever encountered a plant, other than what
RH> cops held up as a visual aid in a drug awareness talk in high school.

DD> My point was that hemp is useful for much more than "getting high".
DD> The problem for law enforcement is that it's impossible to tell
DD> Illinois Ditch Weed from Maui Wowie. Except by complex testing. It's
DD> easier for them to outlaw the whole class. Hemp cloth still outlasts
 DD> regular cotton.

RH> So, since regular cotton is easier to ID, it gets grown and made into
RH> more clothing and such like. I've not encountered hemp fabric except as
RH> burlap but have a good acquaintance with cotton, in grades from cheap
RH> to quality. We've also got a couple of bamboo dish towels you'ld never
RH> know they weren't high quality cotton unless we informed you otherwise.

DD> I'd not expect most in America to be familiar with hemp cloth. And not
DD> many these days with hemp rope and cordage. Apparently, from what I
DD> have read, hemp linens outlast cotton/flax cloth 4 to 1. And denim
DD> jeans made from hemp are much more durable than cotton denim.

I've seen some hemp clothes here & there but the price has been too much
for our budget. Style, also, hasn't been what I would buy on a lot of
it.

DD> Hemp generally proves more versatile than cotton; people can use it to
DD> make biofuel, a replacement for fiberglass and even automotive parts,

DD> Laws in the United States permit farmers to grow cotton but not hemp.
DD> The government prohibited hemp growing due to its association with

 DD> http://www.ehow.com

RH> Not Wiki? (G) Still, quite informative in a nut shell.

DD> ehow is nearly as reliable as the Wiki - and it was first on the Bing
DD> list. Bv)= I take the hyperbole with a LARGE pinch of salt.

Some things I'll use half a shaker, or more of salt. (G)

DD> hold down hillside erosion, etc. And as the Southern California
DD> climate is very like that of South Africa ........

RH> It's pretty, like so many others, which makes it harder to wipe out.
RH> Too many people like the no mow factor now also.

DD> So, hit it with Paraquat or Agent Orange. Bv)=

RH> You can, chemicals like that also give me breathing issues.

DD> You do know that was a facetious comment, right?

And I was just telling you that I wouldn't go near the stuff.

 DD> Title: Israeli Orange Chicken
 DD> Categories: Poultry, Citrus, Wine
 DD> Yield: 8 Servings

 DD> 5 lb Roasting chicken
 DD> 2 Oranges; whole
DD> 1 lg Onion; in large slices
 DD> 1/2 c Orange juice; fresh squeezed
DD> 2 tb Ginger; fresh grated
 DD> 2 tb Honey
 DD> 1/2 c Wine

RH> I'd probably sub out chicken broth/stock for the wine but otherwise
RH> looks good. I saw a similar recipe in the cook book we picked up on our
 RH> trip to Israel.

DD> I thought you might use grape juice or de-alcoholed wine. I've made
DD> similar dishes with "real" wine and with substitutes. All were very
 DD> good.

Grape juice has more carbs in it than chicken broth/stock. Depending on
the rest of the meal, I might use juice, I might use stock.

DD> I recommend this one as well..........

 DD> MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

 DD> Title: Orange Chicken w/Bacon
DD> Categories: Poultry, Pork, Citrus, Marinades
 DD> Yield: 8 Servings

 DD> 8 Un-skinned chicken breasts
 DD> 16 sl Bacon

Agreed, it does look good. Did it have any sort of nutritional
information with it?
