I've always been intrigued by the way the valves and rods and noisy, rattley
bits all worked together to move things forward. And by the chuff-chuff of the
escaping steam as well as the steam whistle. I'd have been in hog heaven in
your situation. What did your brothers think of it?

Depending on the item - cotton undershirts/pants weren't especially stiff or
scratchy. Bed linens were a bit stiff .... but not, as I recall, "scratchy". Of
course my mom ironed the sheets and pillowcases on a "mangle" (iron)
http://tinyurl.com/MANGLE-IT for those who are clewless as to what a "mangle"
is.

Of course the stuff that had been through the Niagara starch bucket was stiff
and scratchy. And required ironing. Mom pounced on steam irons when they first
became available. No more sprinkler bottles. Bv)=

My dad always knew he was in trouble if his boxers got starched.

That's pretty much down to the economies of scale. I have one pair of hemp
jeans - and they certainly are hard wearing. The cost was about 50% more than
Wrangler's or Levi's but they have outlasted two pairs of conventional jeans
(so far) so they are overall more economical.

DD> Hemp generally proves more versatile than cotton; people can use it to

DD> Laws in the United States permit farmers to grow cotton but not hemp.
DD> The government prohibited hemp growing due to its association with

DD> ehow is nearly as reliable as the Wiki - and it was first on the Bing

RH> Some things I'll use half a shaker, or more of salt. (G)

 DD> Title: Israeli Orange Chicken
 DD> Categories: Poultry, Citrus, Wine
 DD> Yield: 8 Servings

 DD> 5 lb Roasting chicken
 DD> 2 Oranges; whole
DD> 1 lg Onion; in large slices
 DD> 1/2 c Orange juice; fresh squeezed
DD> 2 tb Ginger; fresh grated
 DD> 2 tb Honey
 DD> 1/2 c Wine

RH> I'd probably sub out chicken broth/stock for the wine but otherwise
RH> looks good. I saw a similar recipe in the cook book we picked up on our
 RH> trip to Israel.

DD> I thought you might use grape juice or de-alcoholed wine. I've made
DD> similar dishes with "real" wine and with substitutes. All were very
 DD> good.

RH> Grape juice has more carbs in it than chicken broth/stock. Depending on
RH> the rest of the meal, I might use juice, I might use stock.

DD> I recommend this one as well..........
