===========================
Hi Michael,

Before I forget--July 13-18 will not work out for us for the picnic;
we're committed to working at our church's VBS.

ML> Putting more pressure on the administration of the private
ML> ones, as they have to either set up their own standards or
RH> Most often they have standards set by the governing agency of the
 RH> school.

ML> I have no qualm about that assuming the governors have
ML> the expertise (or proper guidance) to set them.

Most often there's a committee which is made up of members that have a
good knowledge of such matters.

RH> church related private school generally answers to the pastor, a
RH> governing board of some sort and a headmaster or principal.

ML> I'd see the principal having plenary control over everyday
ML> issues but answering to the governors and perhaps the pastor
ML> regarding policy issues and any irregularities.

That's usually the way things work.

RH> They have a bit more leeway than public school in state requirements.
RH> Most don't require as many standardised tests, teaching to the test
 RH> and so on.

ML> I hate standardized tests, but you have to have a minimum
ML> number of them just because of the volume of assessees. If
ML> the underlying education that the private schools give is
ML> sufficient for the students to sail through the standardized
 ML> tests, all the better.

In a good number of private schools, the students do much better than
public school students who have been taught to the test over the school
year.

ML> They can set standards as high or as low as they want for
 RH> hiring teachers.

ML> Much as we don't want to admit it, there are schools that hire
ML> low. Some of the situations have been egregious enough to have
ML> spawned the imperfect but often necessary systems of objective
ML> testing, teacher certification of various kinds, and so on.

I know, and would not want to be a part of them, for educating my
children or as a member of the faculty/staff.

ML> His underlying health is, er, dubious. He seems to be a
ML> tough old coot (68 or so), but if I am in his condition
ML> at that age, I will not be pleased.
RH> In that you expect to be in better health?

ML> I expect to have fewer issues. Of course there's the distinct
ML> possibility I may have zero issues.

Time will tell. I thought I'd encounter some issues later in life than I
did--but I've managed to overcome most of them, one way or another.

ML> I guess they could do that for him, but maybe the VA in Alaska
ML> doesn't hold much truck with that kind of sissiness.
RH> Mine was done by an Army doctor at Fort Stewart, GA.

ML> Sure, and Alaskans are tough.

Got to be, to live in a climate like that.

 ML> Dark chocolate pudding
 RH> That looks decadently good!
 ML> I thought so, too.
RH> There's very little chocolate that I turn down. (G)

ML> I was tempted to post a chocolate rum recipe, but

I'd have looked at it, but not ever tried making it.

ML> Title: German Chocolate Ice Cream **
ML> Categories: Ice cream, Freezer, Desserts, Chocolate
 ML> Servings: 1

 ML> ------------------------------PATTI -
 ML> VDRJ67A------------------------------ 1/2 c Sugar
 ML> 2 tb Flour
 ML> 1/8 ts Salt
 ML> 1/8 ts Cinnamon
 ML> 2 c Milk
ML> 4 oz Sweet chocolate; melted
 ML> 2 Eggs; beaten
 ML> 1/2 c Shredded coconut
 ML> 2 c Light cream -OR- Half & Half
 ML> 1/2 c Pecans; chopped

I'll put the coconut and pecans in half for Steve, leave the other half
straight chocolate for me. (G)

ML> I had a seafood meal of very tough whelk and very tender sea
ML> urchin the other day. It was entertaining and good but not
ML> memorable the way the Wagyu meal was.
RH> Some are very memorable for their--shall we say--lack of greatness.

ML> This meal will soon be forgotten.

It'll live on in Fido for a few days, then scroll off the screens of our
computers, only to live in archives.

Catch you later,
Ruth
