A tale of two ickies

Whole Fruit lemon sorbet - this brand has a good rep, so
I went with it, it having warmed up to the degree that
one might appreciate a quiescently frozen confection.
Well, I don't any more care for bracing tartness, but
this was pretty flabby and sweet, though of some lemon
flavor. Texture smooth and pretty decent. C-

Luigi's lemon Italian ice - texture of ice, flavor of
a potato. No redeeming social value, despite its
ingredients being more pristine than the above. D-

and a pleasant surprise

Yi Pin hot sauce - I was surprised by this stuff, which came
in a bag of otherwise utterly mediocre Chinese takeout. It's
your standard vinegar hot sauce but a tad hotter and with a
hit of garlic that made it quite superior. The soy sauce in
the same bag tasted like salt water with cigarette butts put
out in it. B

and no surprise at all

Chantemerle Chardonnay (Rijckaert) (Arbois) 03 - pleasant
richness on the tongue, good acid though, went well with
spicy Chinese food. B-

Roogle Red 06 (SE Australia) - I tasted Cabernet astringency
and Shiraz fruitiness but couldn't exactly place this. Well
balanced, with nice ripe plummy fruit and enough body to go with
any steak. Parker gives this a 90, and it's both $5 better and $5
cheaper than the Terra Barossa stuff that gets a similar rating. B

Ch. la Papeterie (Montagne St.-Emilion) 94 - my experience
with older Bordeaux is generally confined to the top growths,
and this (on my own dime) was a bit of a revelation. Dull
brick red edged with brown, woodsy aroma, no fruit apparent.
Cedar, ham, and perhaps mud on the palate - a great emptiness
as if something had been there and had left perhaps a couple
years ago. Medium woodsy pork-broth finish. Actually went
quite well with a chicken Marsala that I'd deliberately made
saltier rather than sweet. C                                        +

Castano Monastrell (Yecla, Spain), 06 - dark purple,
spicy plummy nose; plums, raisins, cinnamon, stems on
the palate. A little on the sweet side, also a bunch
of tannin. Fairly nice for the price ($6.99). B-

Altos las Hormigas Malbec (Mendoza, Chile) 07 - deep
purple, slightly opaque. Plum and chocolate nose, very
jammy. Nicely dry on the palate, a bit acid, tannic,
raisins and chocolate. Very savory, meaty finish. B+

La Dote Pinot Noir (Curico Valley, Chile) 06 - vaguely
cabernettish nose, not like a PN particularly, too many
blackberries I guess. Meat and smoke on the palate, some
plum and blackberry. Fruit and green pepper on the finish.
Not too bad, but atypical. C+
