We had a physics teacher who was universally despised for being
dull, not invariably accurate, and perving on my lab partner.
When it came time to take the physic board, we all resolved to
fill it out so as to get every question wrong. I was the only
one who didn;t chicken out, as the only one who didn't care what
college I went to if any. I ended up at the college of my parents'
choice, and he ended up being director of admissions at my high
school.

Not long ago I had the weirdest experience, a senior moment to
trump all other senior moments. I was looking at this crossword
puzzle, maybe the NY Times Sunday or the New York Magazine,
anyway something urban, which I'm generally good at, and I
realized that I had no clue how to read the clues, much less fill
out the puzzle. It was almost as if skrzypce baobab badonga, if
you know what I mean. Took me several minutes to squeeze the
nonsense out of my head and proceed. Until recently I was pretty
comfy with starting off cooking something and then wander off to
do the e-mail or whatever, then finishing the cooking; now I can't
do that any more, as out of sight out of mind, and I could easily
ruin a pot or pan if I didn't consciously remind myself not to do
so. Of course, my father always did that for as long as I'd known
him, which means from the age of 38 or so - he was known not only
to burn pans but to actually melt them. It's hard to melt a
Revereware teakettle, but he did it. Jonathan burns the heck out
of cookware, too, and the most galling thing is that most of what
he destroys in the houseware department is mine.

           -INTO STRIPS 1/4 IN. BY 2 IN
    3/4 lb CARROTS, CUT INTO STRIPS
  2-1/4 oz PICKED SCALLIONS TOPS &
           -BOTTOMS CUT INTO STRIPS
  2-1/2 oz PICKED RED GINGER, CUT
           -INTO LONG, THIN STRIPS
  1-1/2 oz CHINESE PICKLES, CUT
           -INTO THIN STRIPS
  2-1/2 tb EACH PEANUTS AND COCO-
           -NUT, ROASTED AND GROUND
  1-1/4 tb SESAME SEEDS
    1/4 ts EACH SALT & SUGAR
    1/8 ts BLACK PEPPER

The day before, either prepare the chicken
broth using a standard recipe or use canned
chicken broth for convenience. Slowly simmer
the chicken broth until the meat is cooked thr-
ough.  Place the chicken out overnight to
dry. The next day, deep fry it in peanut oil
and then separate the meat from the bones. With
your hands, tear the meat into long narrow
strips. Cut the green onions, carrots, ginger,
and pickles into long strips.  Combine the
green onions, lettuce, carrots, scallions, red
ginger, pickles, peanuts, coconut, and sesame
seed.  Mix well.  Add the chicken.  Starting
with the sugar, mix the rest of the ingredients
with the exception of the parsley and won ton
until thoroughly combined.  Just before serv-
ing, add the parsley and won ton pastry and
toss lightly.
