RH> That would have been fun; Food Network must have had a decent sized

DD> Back in the day it was a *much* different network than it is today. It

RH> So when/why did it change?

You've seen me say this before - and not being cynical - the answer to the why
is, as always, money. The bean counter department trumped the quality
department as it seems to do with increasing frequency in this world.

DD> unlike the cheaply produced crap that is there today - the thinly

RH> Iron Chef was originally a Japanese show. We saw it in HI, in Japanese.
RH> I forget if they used sub titles, dubbed into English or how/if they
RH> translated it but it was fun to watch.

The original shown on TVFN was the Japanese version featuring (I think) some
guys named Morimoto, Nakamura and Sakai. When Scripps bean counters figured out
they could do the show on-shore and even import Morimoto to be an Iron Chef
without sending royalties to Japan they did so.

We have our own Iron Chef right here. He is the current moderator and has been
known, at picnics (probably elsewhere, too), to be presented with surprise
ingredients and expected to some up with something tasty. Personally, I druther
eat Michael's output than some of the stuff I saw win the day on Iron Chef.

DD> trattorias and cooking at the drop of one of his red clogs.

RH> I thought they were orange clogs, looked that way to me anyway. Maybe
RH> they faded by the time I started watching. (G)

DD> Or he may have changed colours. I have a vivid memory of him wearing
DD> red clogs to match his red scooter. The camera zoomed in on them
DD> several times. A search via Der Bingle shows a line of Mario Batali
DD> clogs with orange prominently featured. Of course my memory may be as
DD> suspect as my gall bladder ... it has been nearly 20 years since that
 DD> Italian trip show aired.

RH> Are there any Youtube video clips possibly available? We saw that for
RH> the first time in HI also; I recall one segment showing how to skin a
 RH> (cooked) potato.

I seldom do U-Toob or any on-line video at all. So, I haven't looked. But,
given the ubiquity of people re-posting copyrighted material (with or without
let from the copyright holder(s)) it's probably there somewhere.

DD> But, Fleming was the founding host of Jeopardy, just as Bob Barker was
DD> the original host of Price is High and Hugh Downs was on
 DD> Concentration.

RH> I remember watching Concentration at my grandmother's house when I was
RH> a kid. Saw the new version years later and wasn't that impressed with
RH> it. Remember Alan Ludden and Password, Gary Moore and I've Got a
RH> Secret? (I think he was a replacement.) I've forgotten who was the host
RH> of To Tell the Truth, another oldie.

TTTT was originally hosted by Bud Collyer, followed by Gary Moore and then by
Joe Garagiloa. Secret was originally hosted by Gary Moore and he was replaced
by Steve Allen. Then there was the "(Insert Amount) Pyramid" hosted by Dick
Clark who should have stuck to American Bandstand. There were a lot of those
mindless babble panel shows on the glass teat back in the 50s and 60s, indeed
up until I pretty much quit watching TeeVee several years ago.
