============================
Hi Michael,

RH> gazillion years, since I was a kid and tried a small amount in making
RH> chili for the family) regular chili. Mom's chili sauce recipe called
RH> for about half or 3/4 teaspoon of tabasco for the batch--I made it that
RH> way once, and added more heat the next (and subsequent) time(s) I made
 RH> it.

ML> I admit to using hot pepper sauce in some places where
ML> vinegar would be asked for, but I don't use vinegar much.

OTOH, I use quite a bit of vinegar. I keep a bottle of the standard
apple cider on hand to use in quantity, like when I make the chicken
marinade. I keep a better grade of it, the kind that has the "mother" on
the bottom, on hand for use in salad dressing. The pantry also has
balsamic, white balsamic, red wine, rice, malt and several flavored
balsamic vinegars on hand.

ML> So far I've not had any noticeable problem with variations
ML> in blood sugar, despite my doctor's warning me about the
ML> possibility from the newer medications.
RH> Good, but just remember that there is the potential for seriously low
RH> blood sugar. Do you test, and how often?

ML> Twice a year maybe for the A1C checks (always impressively bad)
ML> and the diabetic -opathy checks (always impressively good).

Don't know if I've had any of the latter, maybe in some form that I
haven't recognised. But, my A1C checks have been remarkably good, ever
since the one 3 years ago that was the wake up call. I'm due for one
next month; my doctor is now going with an every 6 months check now that
he knows how well things are controlled.

ML> I've learned from my father's experience, and his numbers were
ML> anomalous, and he lived up to about 80 years with unmanaged
ML> blood sugar that averaged between 200 and 300; below 200 he was a
ML> ctually physically unabled to think. Whether that's an adaptation
ML> or our natural state I am not so sure, but I have his example to

Interesting that it affected him that way; it makes you wonder what
would have happened if he had caught and treated it early on.

ML> cite. Anyhow the daily management thing is not for me; I've
ML> evolved a sort of routine that doesn't involve sharp things, as
ML> though I don't care for them, the TSA likes them even less. I
ML> know that most people have no problem taking along supplies for

I never had an issue with TSA, but only flew with sharp stuff a few
times.

ML> a trip, but I'm not most people, and carrying a month's worth
ML> of lancets and syringes and so on on a complex and likely
ML> international itinerary seems really pushing it. Carrying a
ML> cooler along with two carryons, can't see me doing that.

I've got a small thermal unit that has room for an ice pack and a couple
of pens; it's about 4" by 8" by 1". It came with a one use container for
used sharps; I think you could buy refills. TSA never gave me any
problems with that or the lancets or needle tips for the pens. All were
in original packaging if unused, in a childproof pill bottle marked that
it was sharps, in carry on.

ML> All of the above true. The flight was semi-fun, like climbing
ML> the Statue of Liberty something to do so as to be able to brag
ML> about the experience. The weather had its effects on the flights
 ML> as well.
 RH> Or like trying a furian. (G)

 ML> I take it that's a furious durian?

Most likely, new fruit fusion would be my second guess.

ML> The funny thing is the potato makes me think the opposite.
RH> I'm seeing potato in a lot of soup recipes lately. Is it a cheap
 RH> thickener or what?

 ML> Well, yeah.

Semi rhetorical question there. I'd rather have more cauliflower or
broccoli or whatever than potato.

 ML> Peepshi = Peeps Sushi
 ML> categories: weird, infantile, dessert
 ML> yield: 1 batch
ML> 6 Peeps per roll, 1 Peep per handroll, 1 Peep per nigiri
ML> 1 box Rice Krispies Treats
ML> 1 box Fruit by the Foot
RH> Somewhat silly, but fun to read, probably even more fun to try. Hmmmm,
RH> wonder if grandkids would be interested.................

ML> Depends on how Asian-oriented they are (or how bloodthirsty
ML> in a Peepy sort of way).

Not that Asian oriented that I know of but a couple of them are old
enough to really appreciate semi gross things like that.

ML> Oyster Cakes with Hijimi Remoulade
 ML> cat: shellfish, Hawaiian-Japanese
 ML> yield: 1 batch

 ML> Sam Choy

Sorry, Sam, Steve doesn't do cilantro.
