 NB> Indeed..?

And her mother's maiden name was McCarver --- all moving inland from the
Carolinas. The other Granny's maiden name was Chowning (as in the tavern
people from Williamsbug, VA) but I never got to meet her as she died before I
was born. A lot of bits of family history got stuck in my head over the years.
But, Georgia is the one who unsnarls the threads and keeps track of that sort
of thing.

NB> Nice mixed orchard... :) When we lived in Willow Grove (PA, outside

My grandmother had a hand-cranked cherry stoner. I wish I knew where it got
to. Knowing her it probably got tossed or given to a passing stranger. She
actually paid the local trash guy a fair whack of green-backed dollars to haul
off a huge trove of Mason jars from half-pint up to a gallon - some with glass
closures. He hauled them off to an antique shop and flogged them for even more
$$$$.

    1/3 c Cilantro leaves
      1 tb Garlic; minced
      2 ts Chilli spice
      2 ts Cumin
1 1/2 ts Cracked black pepper
    1/2 lb + 2 tb butter; divided
    1/3 c Olive oil
10 oz Corn tortillas, chopped fine
      3 qt Water
      4 oz Chicken-seasoned stock base
    1/3 c Flour
1 1/2 lb Tomatoes; peeled, coarse
           - chopped
2 lb Grilled chicken meat; diced
           - in 1/4" cubes
           Corn tortilla; in 1/8" x 1"
           - pieces and fried
           Cheddar cheese; grated,
           - garnish

In a food processor, place the bell pepper, onion, celery,
carrots, and cilantro and finely chop. Set aside the chopped
  vegetable in a large bowl.

In a small bowl, combine the garlic, chilli spice, cumin,
and black pepper. Stir into the chopped vegetables.

In a large pan over medium heat, melt 1/4 lb plus 2 tb of
the butter and the olive oil. Add vegetable niixture and
saute, stirring often, until vegetables are transparent and
  sightly browned.

In a food processor, finely chop the 10 ounces of tortillas.
Add the chopped tortillas to vegetable mixture. Saute over
medium heat until soft. Transfer mixture to a large pot over
medium heat. Add the water and chicken base, mixing until
  chicken base is dissolved.

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt remaining 1/4
lb butter and whisk in the flour. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes,
while whisking, to make a roux. Add the roux to soup. Stir
and let simmer 20 minutes. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and
then diced chicken. Cook until heated through.

Ladle soup into bowls and sprinkle with the fried tortilla
  strips and grated cheese.

  Makes 1 gallon of soup.
