Enquiring and slightly cruel minds want to know.

Yesterday I decided to go outside (it was the day after a
rainstorm) to clip my nails, and I was accosted by dozens
of the things - the had clearly just hatched and were so
cuuuute. Ended up with more bites than I can count, but 
they were small, and I presume the critters were relatively
virgin, so my exposure to microbes should have been minimal.

Reminds me to take another tour around the house and empty
all the pools of standing water.

Not really. If you consider the requirements of the critters
as well as of the humans, the theories work just fine.

That had been a more than 100% ironic statement.

If that. When in high school I read that if you ate a tablespoon
of nutmeg, you'd get a wicked high. The obvious experiment was
in order. The only effect was that to this day, almost 50 years
later, I am extremely leery of nutmeg, and often a sprinkle on
top is too much.

Veloute de chicons
cat: French, soup
servings: 8

2 kg endives
1 lg onion
2 garlic cloves
100 g butter
salt, pepper, nutmeg
2 L chicken broth
200 mL sour cream
chervil sprigs
h - for the broth
1 stewing chicken
5 L water
leeks
carrots
onions
thyme
1 clove
salt

For the broth: Immerse chicken in water. Bring to
the boil and skim. Add other ingredients, lower
heat, and cook 2 1/2 hr. Strain broth and reserve
chicken for another use.

Cut endives in 1 cm pieces, discarding base.

Mince onion and garlic.

Wilt vegetables in butter for 10 min, covered.
Season. Add broth, bring to the boil, reduce
heat, and cook 30 to 45 min. Correct seasoning;
if the endive is bitter, you can add a dash of
sugar. Strain.

Nap soup plates with cream, pour in soup, and
garnish with chervil.
