Beg to differ -- "Sambo's is a restaurant, formerly an American restaurant 
chain, started in 1957 by Sam Battistone, Sr. and Newell Bohnett. Though the 
name was taken from portions of the names of its founders, the chain soon 
found itself associated with The Story of Little Black Sambo."

They were victims of people finding racism in innocent things. That being 
said, there was little unique to the chain .... just another M.O.R. Quick 
Serve venue with unremarkable food. They probably would have died anyway 
without the trumped up racist remarks.

Big Boy is another (formerly) popular restaurant chain/franchise that has 
shrunk mightily from its glory days .... there are 9 left in California, 2 in 
Cleveland, OH, 1 each in North Dakota and Illinois, and the balance (79) in 
the home state of Michigan. Oddly there are 281 Big Boy restaurants in Japan.

Their signature sandwich the Big Boy served as a model for McDonald's Big Mac. 
"The signature Big Boy hamburger which is the original double decker hamburger 
started as a joke. Some reports say it was first called the Fat Boy hamburger 
until discovering Fat Boy was a protected trademark.

The Big Boy consists of two thin beef patties placed on a three layer bun with 
lettuce, a single slice of cheese, and either mayonnaise with red relish, Big 
Boy special sauce (thousand island dressing) or (in some locations) tartar 
sauce on each slice of bun. The Big Boy hamburger originally called for a 
quarter pound (4 ozs.) of fresh ground beef, but later, franchisees were 
permitted to use frozen beef patties, and the minimum content reduced to a 
fifth of a pound (3.2 ozs.) of beef, perhaps in response to McDonald's Big

Their other iconic sandwich survives in many other restaurants - called the 
"Slim Jim" (although it's not slim nor does it look like a burglar's tool)

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Big Boy's Slim Jim
 Categories: Pork, Breads, Cheese, Vegetables
      Yield: 1 serving

      4 oz Thin sliced baked ham
      2 sl Emmenthaler Swiss cheese
      1    (6" or 8") hoagie bun; seeds
           - optional
      4 sl Ripe tomato; thin
           Thousand Island dressing
      1 tb Butter; softened

  Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium-high heat.
  Butter the inside of the sandwich roll, both top and
  bottom, and lightly brown on the griddle. Remove bread
  from griddle. On the bottom of the sandwich roll arrange
  (in order) ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato. Spread the top of
  the roll with sandwich sauce and place on top of the
  assembled sandwich.

  Place sandwich on griddle (bottom down) and weight with a
  heavy metal pan lid. Grill sandwich until the cheese
  melts. Cut in half, garnish with a dill pickle spear and
  serve with potato chips (if you must) or French fries
  (preferred).
