I've seen other responses to what you asked me about MultiMail. It's a very
nice program, has a few nice features but is nothing like the actual Blue
Wave reader. It will, however, run on several different platforms with
ease. Here on my Slackware Linux 14.1-powered machine, I use the Qodem
terminal program that will allow me to read my offline mail by using the
keystroke of CTRL-M (short for "Multimail"). Very handy.

I found that trying to find a good command shell-based text editor for
Windows was pretty difficult. The only thing I could find was B, a
stripped-down freeware version of the BRIEF Editor. It wasn't very
intuitive for me.

However, under Linux, I use joe which is Wordstar-ish in the way it works.
A very nice editor for me.

If I were you, if you wish to continue using DOS-based stuff under Windows 8
and above, I'd look into creating a virtual XP machine that is
"disconnected" from the Internet. Doing that will allow you to run it
indefinitely with little worry about people getting into it or something
since you can tell the virtual machine that it has no Internet connection
whatsoever. I have several virtual machines I run here for different
things, such as ham radio, under VMWare Player which is free for Windows and
Linux.

DS> That is what I have observed. But the old HP Laser printer is still
DS> working just fine and we don't like to replace things that are working.

I have a HP Laserjet 1320 that I bought for about $80 several years ago. It
has both parallel port and USB port connections on the back. I purchased a
JetDirect print server that connects to the printer via USB and I control
the print server via telnet. Doing that really extended the life of that
printer for me. When I was living at my parents' home, I set up both of my
parents' computers to use that 1320 as a default printer.

I can get the X cartridge (the actual cartridge number escapes me right now,
but the "X" means "extended" and is the larger of the two you can get for
it) for $15 and free shipping all day long on Amazon. The rebuilt
cartridges work great and I get about 4000-5000 pages out of each cartridge.
I think I will need to take the printer apart soon and clean the corona
wire, but that's really a minor detail.

Those older HP Laserjets are really reliable. So is my little HP Officejet
4630 inkjet all-in-one. I use the Laserjet for printing manuals on; it's
cheap and efficient.
