Weird stuff I made:
       
Italian crepes

I found myself with way too much stale dated dairy on hand: the last
half cup of a 4 litre jug of milk was starting to turn, the coffee
cream was iffy, some ricotta was way past its Use By date and there
was whey separating from the yogurt and the sour cream. So in a fit
of desperation I glommed all that crap together with a couple of
eggs and set out to make pancakes.

I made a savory batter with 3/4 white flour, 1/4 yellow corn flour
(yep corn flour, not meal or starch), baking soda rather than
baking powder, no sugar, olive oil in place of melted butter, and
added garlic powder, mixed Italian seasoning and ground chilies. I
also fried them in olive oil. The batter was thin and I made huge
pancakes in my largest non stick frying pan that were almost
crepe-like. After I flipped them I added a little grated Mozza to
the cooked side which melted nicely. To serve I cut them into wedges
like pizza. This little experiment actually turned out very well and
I intend to do this more often. Afterwards, I looked for recipes to
see if this had been done before and although I didn't get an exact
ingredient match, savory, cheesy, herbed, Italian pancakes are in
fact a real thing after all.
            
Neat stuff I received as a gift:

Raine's family was here last week and she brought me a bottle of
Frost Bite hot sauce which is clear and colourless.  It is
apparently a water soluble emulsion of capsaicin. The maker claims
it is 600,000 Scoville units but they lie. It is just a little bit
hotter than Tabasco. It has heat without chile flavour but does have
a citrusy taste. It's a neat gimmick but once it's used up I doubt
very much if I'll get more.

Intriguing stuff I bought:

Christian Moueix 2010 Merlot. I haven't opened it yet as I'm saving
it for a special, big red meat meal but if I can believe the hype it
will be pretty special. It's called "Baby Petrus" because Moueix
oversees production at Chateau Petrus and this wine comes from his own
little nearby winery.  Internet people say "classic Bordeaux
character"  and "this is a very serious wine for the money". We
shall see.
